  1. Jacob, I don't have a specific answer. How can I, since you give absolutely no information about the candidates ("statist" is too general and covers too much to come up with specific questions). However, let me answer a broader issue. You've asked a number of questions on this board, all without context and all without giving your own opinion. I don't know if you expect someone to wave a magic wand and make the appropriate answers appear, but that's not going to happen. Since you appear interested in Objectivism, let me give you one rule for the road: try thinking for yourself first. Work things out in your own mind. It's perfectly okay if you're wrong. That's how you learn. Give it a shot.
  2. Brianlee, I (and probably most people) agree with you on things like gansta rap, etc. However, instead of being "disgusted," might it not be better to be grateful that we live in a country where artists are able to produce whatever they want, just as the audience has a right NOT to listen or watch. Would you rather be in Weimar Germany, cold-war Russia, China, N. Korea, etc. where government goons and censors determine and approve each and every piece of appropriate art. If you think about, you might feel better the next time you alphabetize some stupid heavy metal and rap "artist." As long as they are allowed to exist, so are the artist that give you pleasure! Ain'T that great!
  3. Hobhouse, you sound remarkably like James Taggard. Do you feel people who have more than you owe you something? If someone gets an inheritance and you don't, do you feel that person's "luck" obligates him to share with you? Exactly where are you coming from? Oh, and, could you please watch your spelling a bit? Thanks.
  4. People like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods have been honing their skills since childhood, practicing much more than their peers and becoming the best. I read an article about how Michael Jordan specifically had a "love of the game" clause put into all of his contracts which specified something to the effect that he could practice as many hours as he wished. When he was starting out, he was known to be at the gym pre-dawn before the doors opened. That's not luck. That's hard work.
  5. 1. Keep looking. 2. No. There's quite a bit of naysaying going on. 3. Where does the director disagree with AS conclusion?
  6. There's just so much pessimism about the AS movie. Whatever turns out,it isn't the end of the world, guys. This reminds me of all the people in AS who kept saying, "It can't be done," regarding Rearden's Metal. Maybe we could just relax a bit. Wait and see what happens. And yes, the movie will probably be a bit different from the book. Most movies are. Let's hope for the best. I mean, if there's already so much grumbling about something as simple as the cafeteria set, certain people will go nuts when the movies comes out.
  7. You're right Radgnar. But I don't watch an action movie for its total accuracy. I know it'll be far out, like the whole Bourne series. I thought Salt was wonderfully suspenseful and had good twists. Jolie was excellent. And I've read about the concept of Russian-trained littl kids who grow up in totally American environments, so I think there's probably some truth there. Anyway, I loved the excitement. The movie is fun, and I can get into that. And if you want friggin' accuracy: this is the only action movie I've ever seen where the heroine takes off her high heels when she runs!! Most directors think running (or walking) in five-inch stilletoes is easy. Just try it!!
  8. Just saw the movie Salt, and highly recommend it. For an action flick, it never loses its tension. I was on the edge of my seat throughout. And Angelina Jolie is superb. After seeing her in this, I can actually see her as Dagny - attractive, but not too sexy. Tough but with a great vulnerability showing through.
  9. Yuk - ya had to go and mention broccoli. Now I'm totally turned off. Anyway, is she really a female Quasimodo? If she's totally ugly, you might actually have a point. I'm going to assume she's not, since most people aren't. Yet you can't function sexually with her. Would you consider discussing the problem with a professional? There might be a reason why you can't function with this wonderful person. When I was living in NY and knew some of the "objectivist leaders," there was one at least (I won't mention names!) whose wife was totally unattractive (okay, she was butt-ugly). Yet he invariably refered to her as "my lovely wife." I guess he really loved her. And I guess it's all in how you look at things. Many a shrink can help sort it out.
  10. Romantic, a lot of guys I know are hung up on looks. They seem to go through magazines and assume every woman should look like a swim suit model. That just ain't realistic. I've even had discussions with a few objectivists who placed looks on a moral level. It seems that this woman means everything to you, but she doesn't measure up to a certain standard in her appearance. Is it really so impossible to accept her for what she looks like? Believe me, looks fad. Character and personality are forever. Which would you rather have. BTW, how about your looks? I once dated a short, bald, heavy-set and pretty homely guy who described himself as "slim and good-looking." I couldn't believe he was that blind. Romantic, take a look in the mirror and try to cherish the treasure you already have.
  11. Emanon, you make a point that eluded me. This Jacobgalt is the same guy that wrote about having sex with animals and incest. Yeah - there are some real weird sexual overtones. (Actually, I felt like pointing out that the proper term for "butt slap" is spank, but I didn't want to be rude. Now I wish I'd said it. Creeped out
  12. Do you have any opinion on the subject? If so, what are they?
  13. They don't always intersect. We have so many choices (lucky us). Yes, obviously, there are times when right and wrong plays a large factor (to rob that bank or not ...) but so much of the time, it's a matter of preference, that's all. I remember dating a dolt who tried to say that my preference for vegetables was wrong and his liking of meat and taters was right. No right or wrong here (let's not get into a dietary discussion here). We had different preferences in food and both of us were healthy.
  14. People are different. For some, one special sexual partner would be the thing. For others, a variety of partners might be preferable. There's no one-size-fits-all answer. People aren't clones. They will, legitimately, act differently from each other. We need to accept that instead of dwelling too heavily on right and wrong.
  15. Jacobgalt, if your neighbor is powerful enough to have something that'll destroy the whole world, for god's sakes, run like hell. Do you really want to mess with that guy and steal his stuff???? (Now, all joking aside, please, do rethink how realistic some of your basis premises are. There seems to be a heavy focus on stealing, destroying, etc.) Is that really what you've gotten out of OPAR?)
  16. Good lord, what have you been learning from OPAR? And how have you been applying it to Fido?
  17. Jacobgalt, you seem to be concentrating on strange things that most people wouldn't even think of - from having sex with animals to incents to stealing elections. Might it not be better to focus on things that are moral and not so weird? Just wondering.
  18. Is there anything in Rand's writings that would make you think that picking a team and cheering it on is improper?
  19. Chris, I'm assuming he's considering Harvard for the opportunities. If all he wants to say is, "Hi, I'm from Harvard and thus a big shot," then I take back my answer, but I didn't get that from his post. I think he sees what Harvard can offer.
  20. "I mean at the point that I see that I can benefit from something more by having my neighbor dead than alive why is it not good to murder him?" At what point, when your neighbor can benefit more from having you dead, is it not good for him to murder you? Just wondering.
  21. MG - this is what they're showing 10-year olds in school!!!! I must be from a different planet. This not only teaches NOTHING, but is soooo inappropriate, it leaves me speechless. I mean, we've educating our 10-year old on different sexual positions, yet so many can't write, spell or read properly upon graduation????? Help!!!!! These kids know so little, but god help us, if the reports are to be believed, the average 13-year old can perform oral sex to perfection. Is the school board okay with this video?
  22. "You can't fix everybody." Smart attitude.
  23. Well, here I must admit I'm almost sure the powers that be will turn things into a triangle/quadrangle. Yeah, that'll be a pity. I'm trying to be positive, but a person can't have everything! I'm tryin to figure out if spicing up the romance(s) is worth getting the message out. I hope so.
  24. Looks like I missed that one. What is D'Kian's Second Law?
