The Toohey Corps

The Toohey Corps is a reference to the Sinestro Corp

I wanted to make a list of intellectuals in the world that carry the tourch and spirit of Ellsworth Toohey. So far I have Paul Krugman, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, (debating on whether to throw Coulter on this list or give her a Red Ring, LAWL.) for the mondern day bearers of the torch.

The Sinestro Corps are also influenced and lead by a being called the Anti-Monitor who is pretty much bent on destruction of the universe. I figured Kant could play this metaphorical role for the Toohey Corps because all three of the people I listed claim him as an influence.

If you guys can think of anymore people you want on the list, defiantely post them up here. It's a good examination of our Rogue Gallery. :)

Edit: Keynes has to be thrown in there somewhere, but he is dead. We need to make a list of dead enemies and living ones.

If we're indulging in this sordid gossip and keeping it confined to North America...

Pat Robertson comes to my mind immediately, I'd also be tempted to say the Pope but being raised Protestant I know nothing of the Papacy.

I'm honestly having a great deal of difficulty with this. "You see Toohey, I don't think of you." matches my attitude.

Not trying to knock you Mammon, I think we'll be friends but isn't there something, just wrong about this?

Edit:

I know its valuable to know and avoid the enemy and this thread can help in that but still ...

I don't see Coulter or Robertson as being intellectuals, and therefore, they are not in the tradition of Ellsworth Toohey. Rather, they are social critics, poor ones at that, who make their living by being as edgy and extremist (I know Rand and myself hate this word, but it does apply to these two), with a pure goal of causing controversy through speech. I see Toohey more as a respected source of modern knowledge and philosophy, certainly something the right-wing rarely produces, mostly due to Left-wing bias in academia. But anyway, to that list, I would add:

Ward Churchill (I was at Boulder for the protests, and know the people who started it all personally)

Emma Perez (his coworker who is worse)

I'll think of others later.

I just realized that since Emma Perez, as much of an intellectual moron she may be, doesn't qualify for the Toohey Corps, simply because no one reads her works except already-brainwashed academics. And thinking about this, I would say in order to qualify as a Toohey, aside from being an altruist to the max, one would have to also have mainstream popularity.

About Chomsky: I loathe this man more than any academic on the planet. Here is a man who purports to uphold the values of freedom, and yet, he himself cannot and does not actually believe in freedom. To him, freedom is an anti-concept, a word that is as meaningless as his entire academic career. We had to read excerpts from his book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media for a public opinion course. Essentially, his theory consists of the idea that mass media are to democracy as the use of the club is to a totalitarian regime. He places Atilla and the capitalist in the same category, claiming that no man can possess his own public knowledge and that it all comes manufactured for us, therefore, democracy (as dangerous as it may be) is literally a concept of mind control. Yet, hypocritically, he has made thousands of dollars off his own books, propagating the "capitalist media empire" and leading hundreds if not thousands of people into believing his nonsense.

Oh yeah, I wanted to add Ward Churchill to the list but I couldn't remember his name. Maybe Micheal Moore too.

Well, they could qualify as cadets or something?

That video of Chomsky I posted above is what prompted me to finally make this thread. He is incredibly smart, he knows what he is doing, and would be a tough opponent to face in a debate. I'd really love to see Peikoff and Chomsky debate, or Yaroon Brook and Chomsky debate.

Edit: There is another woman I'm thinking of, who rights a lot of anti-capitalist stuff and is wealthy off her ass. But I can't think of her name. I think she may have said bad things about Rand a couple months ago, or something.

I would definitely list Michael Moore as a Toohey. Did anyone else watch "Sicko?" Throughout the whole movie, he leads his viewers to agree with him that Socialism is the only way a government should be run. Like, "Look! with Socialism, the French government comes over and does your laundry!" His physique and attitude remind me of a less articulate and less refined Toohey, but their philosophy seems to be the same. Moore will twist words and outright lie to make his side seem legitimate and the other side seem evil. And it works. I know plenty of people who eat his words right up.

And never have I heard so much of the depressing rhetoric that is common in Atlas Shrugged then when I caucused this year. The "government-run health care" nuts really believe they have the right to make all people pay for the health of others. So now people like me who smoke and will eventually get lung cancer should have their treatments paid for by non-smokers, and liver transplants for alcoholics should be paid for by everyone, whether they made conscious decisions to live a healthy life or not, they will still hold responsibility for the unhealthy. It's a culture of need now in this country that should be founded on simple capitalism. you see it with the "They took our jobs!" people, too. As if progress is robbing them of something they deserved...

I would add Al Gore, David Suzuki, Maurice Strong.

How about George Soros?

Going back a few years, Margaret Mead.

Yeah, Soros for sure. I'm reluctant about it because a lot of Neocons hate Soros because he contributes to certain organizations. I don't really rank him as a socialist, but I've read his views on such matters and they are still replusive. Soros is intent on keeping the world in a range of "no extremes" he reminds me of rands Cult of Moral Greyness*

*Funny though, the Sinestro Corps get yellow rings, the Toohey Corps should get Grey Rings. :D

Naomi Klein.

Oh yeah, I hate her too. She gets to be the Lyssa Drak of the Toohey Corps.
