I've even tried removing the current avatar first and then uploading a different one, but the old one still comes back up. What's going on? Well, given that I see your new avatar, I'd say the problem is that your browser is caching the old one. You can refresh the page, which should make the browser check every image on the current page for updates, or you could clear your entire cache.
