  1. taken from: http://www.caught.net/juror.htm This might help you have a better understanding of what it means to be a juror. I personally think being a juror, as well as knowing my rights as one, is very important. If I had to be on trial I know I would rather have a jury full of fully informed people who think it is important to be there than people who are just there because they couldn't find a way to get out of it. Objectively speaking, I agree that being forced into it is wrong. I hope this helps you.
  2. Hello, It was suggested that one might find other people that are learning the Objectivist philosophy, or even old timers, by coming here and introducing myself. GreedyCapitalist, I was happy to see you are from La Grange. I live in Smithville. It's a small world. My online names pretty much stay consistant. They are: kuuipo, kuuipoz, kuuipozparadise. We use scruffyman_1 as our e-mail address, but that is my husband in other forums if you see it. I am thrilled to have found this forum and hope to learn about Objectivism a lot faster now!
  3. I could not believe what I heard this morning about New Jersey passing a new tax on plastic surgery. It is like a cigarette tax and the Representative says it is for the collective good and all proceeds will go to fund a bankrupt state health care system. All my brain could manage to sputter out was "HOW DARE THEY!" and "WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE FIGHT THIS!" I guess it has just become the status quo and no one pays much attention any more. They could be doing the same kind of thing here in Texas and I wouldn't know it because, like others, I am busy trying to survive and pay my bills, so I cannot really throw stones.
  4. Sorry, I couldn't figure out where else to ask this. I see there is a 'New Chat Room' but it is inaccessible. Is there an eta on when it might be back up and running? Thanks, Lyn
  5. Hi, No, I didn't. I still haven't attempted to complete the course. I forgot one other thing. At a large Law Enforcement agency you are required to take a psych test. I have heard some of the questions and can guarantee you I wouldn't be hired. The answers I have given to the few questions I have been asked show me to be an unsocial militia type and that type doesn't get the job. Sample question (paraphrasing): 1. If you had your choice where would you live? Apartment in a large city, cabin in the woods, house in a quiet suburban town. I answered the cabin. Wich means, militia tendencies, no hire. 2. Which would you rather be doing? Spending a night out on the town with a group of friends, playing sports with friends, spending time alone reading a book, spending quality time w/ a significant other? I answered reading. That makes me antisocial, a no-hire. It gets goofier from there. Always do what is absolutely best for YOU!
  6. Hi, I know the original question was posted in relation to personal reading enjoyment by a member. My question is where do I start with assigning books for my son to read. I homeschool my son, he just turned 14, and this is my first year doing this. I am wondering if someone could point me to a good History book for him, one that is as free as possible of the pro-socialist slant that is so prevalent these days. I was trying to get him to read books by Henty etc. to learn history through the stories told, but that just doesn't seem to be cutting it. I am also wondering if anyone knows of good books appropriate for his age and low reading level purely for reading. My wish is that they are written by people who are Objectivists or have a mind bend in that direction. I am thinking about having him read 'Wizard's First Rule' as just a fun book. I absolutely love Terry Goodkind's series. I was even more thrilled when I found that he really was an Objectivist (or at least thinks along those lines). Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Lyn
  7. I am a 911 Operator / Dispatcher. So I have been around law enforcement for about 5 years (Sheriff's Ofc & Police Dept.). I have not seen yet anything that would compromise a person as far as enforcing the law goes. Granted, I am in a rural area. You would most likely have a very serious problem with the ethics course though. I am trying to get my advanced certificate and decided to take the online ethics course. I managed to answer two questions (they all have to be in essay form) before I was just too sickened by it that I had to give up on it for a while. I was told the best way to get through it is to just swallow my convictions and put what I think they want to hear. Obviously I haven't been thru the Police Academy, so I don't know what other classes they have you take that might give you and your convictions pause. I am citizen of Texas, resident of the united states, and don't know where you live. If you are in another state/country then my answer won't help you anyway.
