  1. So my Christian roommate challenged me to find articles, information, scientific articles, anything that is comprehensive, although I particularly mentioned philosophical works to him (and thats what I would prefer if possible) that basically states that religion is not the best survival tool mankind has ever known, at which point I stated that the comment was extremely debatable. He challenged me to find something that encompassed ALL religion as he stated "not just Christianity, even the non-altruistic ones". My first thought was Nietzsche as he suggested it was a tool no longer needed via "god is dead" and that now it is largely detrimental and a new morality must be found. However he focuses primarily on Christianity and Buddhism. Mind you we had a short, light discussion on this and in essence he is a strong believer that his position is the case because when he was younger he states Christianity essentially stopped him from committing suicide. Now he is fairly logical as far as believers go, he understands the bible is fallible etc, he is a non-institutionalized (i.e. anti-papacy) catholic farm kid that goes to the local Thomas Aquinas church and essentially says that his conscience is the final arbiter and will help him make the right decisions along with what he knows (or believes he can logically know, yes makes no sense but again, he's a believer) of what god would want him to do. We get along well and this is purely an intellectual thing, but I would really like to destroy him on this challenge. If anyone could help me out with this I would appreciate it. Besides, I am interested myself in this information.
  2. Whoa whoa whoa. Wait a second. I thought Almonds were a good nut choice? http://www.marksdailyapple.com/almonds/
  3. I know that there are other threads regarding Anarchism/"Anarcho-Capitalism" but they all tend to focus on specific things and I haven't really been able to get a good grasp of said argument in retaliation of these two articles without requiring me to go through tons of pages of conversation. I was curious what the general Objectivist refutations/criticisms are of these two articles? I greatly appreciate the assistance with this. I by no means am an anarchist of any form but I have trouble putting my thoughts into words on this subject. http://www.lewrockwell.com/kinsella/kinsella15.html http://www.lewrockwell.com/shaffer/shaffer60.html
  4. Wow guys, really, cool your shit. Theres no reason to piss your pants over this.
  5. I am a bit confused on the objectivist position on this via the free speech thing among other things. Could someone point me to an explanation on the details of this from an Objectivist perspective? Not specifically this situation, but if corporations should be treated as human beings (i.e. citizens) with rights fleshed out appropriately and so forth.
  6. I suggest you read Rand's essay on financing a free society, it covers how contract insurance would be a method for voluntary taxation, it would not be similar to tax systems we have today.
  7. What on earth? Where in the world did you get this idea? How much Rand non-fiction have you actually read. Objectivism in no way says that the people we disagree with cannot vote, that would mean the next step would be book burning or banning of their content. This is in no way shape or form a concept of Objectivism nor would it ever be a concept in a REAL republic. I guess one of the "problems" you could say we face is that we cannot FORCE views on people as it is opposed to the philosophy, this is why ARI focuses on educational changes so as to get younger people to realize the errors in their thinking and to voluntarily and willingly begin to promote the values of Objectivism within society and in effect, start changing our culture so that these changes come about naturally over time through voted in representatives, rather than political or corporate strong-arming and so forth. You do that by having a cultural majority that creates these changes voluntarily, and then you create a constitution that is more clear, updated, and eliminates the loopholes and other problems of the current one, see the in-progress revised one in the wiki on this site for an example. If the constitution is properly done there should be no fear of these groups modifying or destroying it, with the exception being that the former could happen through the constitutional amendment process, however that is a very difficult thing to do if its done properly and the will of the people would be required for such changes. A voluntarily-financed constitutional republic, ideally based on Objectivist principles is definitely something Rand advocated, as she had specific reasons why she felt anarchistic systems were horrifically insensible. One that violates the rights of its citizens was never expounded upon. These people either are calling themselves Objectivists and are very confused individuals posing to be something they are not, or something.
  8. On your wrists? It would probably cause more problems than not, and depending on your profession it may cause issues in that regard since it cannot be easily covered up. I would be careful in considering tattoos on areas that cannot be easily covered, though I am sure you have already.
  9. I was just curious to what extent you actually understand what Objectivism is. I feel from your post that you don't really have as good an idea of it as you think and may be confusing some things quite a bit. Start at the beggining: http://wiki.objectivismonline.net/wiki/Main_Page This is also a nice guide, setup a bit differently http://objectivistresistance.ning.com/prof...m-explained-amp
  10. I don't necessarily want "stylized" text, but suggestion on what a good font would be for the galt oath. I will probably put in straight across my back from shoulder to shoulder or something like that. I don't really want to put it on my arm, that may be something else in the future as the 2nd tattoo. I am down for suggestions of images/symbols that are either somehow incorporated with the oath or separate but tied in that may be, for instance, underneath the oath or something. I am willing to get a decent size tattoo all together but nothing huge, I don't want to cover up like half my back or anything.
  11. Hello friends. I have never had a tattoo nor do I intend on having more than 2 in my lifetime more than likely. However I do wish, that when I get them that they have a lot of meaning behind them. I would like for my first one to be an Objectivist one. However I am having some issues thinking of how exactly to go about it. I would like to put the Galt oath "I swear by my life and my love of it..." but I am wondering if I could spice this up a bit so its just not text. This would likely go on my back somewhere (shoulders or lower) but I was curious if anyone had any ideas for symbols/pictures etc. or specific font types for the text. I want to make sure I get something that is both unique and that I will really appreciate. I have no problem with colors over black & white.
  12. I am having some trouble going about tackling this counter from someone. I don't think its so much the reasoning but the fact that their specific wording on the subject is causing me issues for some reason, could someone help me clarify this point? In a debate thread regarding Minarchsim/Anarchism:
  13. When considering this one must be careful. You need to keep in mind that Hong Kong was, as far as economic and timely concerns go, only annexed to China fairly recently and had quite notable contrast with the rest of China up until that point. China is an odd dog, it is fairly difficult to get an idea of exactly how "free" it is economically. However one thing is clear, it is steadily increasing in its economic freedom as the country develops. Social freedom is another matter entirely...
