  1. I'm sorry but I saw this and laughed because its the exact opposite. How is socialism going to spur demand? I picture a guy in a Russian hat pointing a AK-47 at a peasant: “comrade, I strongly recommend you begin to desire ipod” (The socialist version of a commercial). They can call the product the “imust”.
  2. How are you increasing demand for the increased GDP? Were is all this increased buying and selling coming from? You can always produce more but if nobody wants it why would you? Your theory makes no sense. In laissez faire capitalism the market is always at equilibrium. This is the most efficient the market can get. So what your proposing is impossible. There is no way to force people to want more then their self interest demands.
  3. I agree. Lets not forget the case of District of Columbia v. Heller from last June that struck down provisions of the Firearms Control Regulations Act of 1975 as unconstitutional passed by 5:4 decision. The fact that 4 Supreme court Justices felt that one of the first and most basic constitutional right should not be upheld gives me shivers.
  4. I like the idea. I would play coy through the whole thing. I would tell the school that I thought it was unfair for “minority” students to have to pay full price because of their disadvantages. "Any one that disagrees is being racist and doesn’t care about minorities". Make the liberals and the schools swallow and choke on their own ideas. The funny thing is that the school has to condemn their own admissions practice in order to criticize them. Once they’ve done so I would later point out the hypocrisy and inconsistency of the schools decisions. It really paints them in a corner so to speak. Sure a lot of liberals are going to get all huffy about it, but the message isn’t for them. It’s for the people who could actually think and judge for themselves. I do agree with GC though, in that you have to know the ideas and philosophy behind what your doing. In the words of Oscar Wilde “The only thing worse then being talked about is not being talked about”
  5. First, I would recommend forgetting about about the Mutual funds. Second I would recommend checking out Motley Fool’s investing basics which has a good overview to someone new to investing. Read the Wall Street journal, you can get it for almost nothing with a students discount. And finally see if your school has a business or finance club you can join. These groups usally have guest speakers in different business fields and is great for networking.
  6. Check out this story from the WSJ: If You Like Michigan's Economy, You'll Love Obama's I think it tells you all you need to know about Obama's so called "tax cut"
  7. I thought it would be funnier as Wittgenstein: Hard to say
  8. That is without a doubt the funniest thing I’ve seen all day. It should be a bumper sticker. I’d buy two!!
  9. She'll fit in nicely in this election then.
  10. In the birth place of the American Revolution no less. I hope Samuel Adams rises from his grave walks to city hall and gives them all a good bitch slap!! Yet this is yet another reason to hate the Redsox and the Pats.
  11. In review of the book "Ceremonial Violence: A Psychological Explanation of School Shootings," at Salon.com the author Jonathan Fast claims that kids that carry out school rampages are inspired by Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. I wonder were he got this information because this is the first I heard of it. It sounds like made up slanderous postulating to me.
  12. In the last couple of weeks while pursing through the news I’ve ran across some very hostile articles and letters towards Ayn Rand and capitalism in the Boston Globe. Check out this letter “Bring back the Keynesians”. Is Boston filled with angry liberals frothing at the mouth?
  13. yeah, its a shame that she don't have a more reasonable church like Obama's
  14. If you can't beat the index you shouldn't have you own show.
  15. John McCain just wants one term then he will bow out of politics. If elected the Republicans will have no hold on him (they don’t call him the ‘Maverick’ because he flows the party line). He’s old and seems somewhat uninterested in rocking the boat. Obama on the other hand is a man with an agenda. He has a strong will to bring his socialism and environmentalism to the table. He’s a guy whose opinions hang on the whims of the majority, so it he screws something up I don’t think hell care. Since when are socialist ready to admit the fault of their system anyways? They’ll just blame the joblessness and inflation on individual and greedy capitalist that are not equal to their noble cause. If anything it will just get them more votes. It looks like the Dems are going to have even a larger majority in Congress as well doubling up Obama’s threat.
  16. Why don't they just get a rifle with scope and shoot'em! If I was in the area I would even volunteer .
  17. It seems to me your irrationally hostile to Apple. From my experience I find that their products are usually superior to their competitors. Every Apple product I’ve bought I’ve been extremely satisfied with. I disagree with your primise of its martketing as well. I have never seen them claim this or even sugest it that if you buy their products you are better then everyone else.
  18. I completely agree with you TheEgoist. Thanks to the likes of Gore and Obama I think that we are witnessing the rise of a new left. It appears that this new left has combined the worst aspects of both left and right; Socialism and Religion. The new left of today has thrown out the over used and discredited Marxist dogma and has embraced the “love your fellow man” type dogma from Christian or even Islamic religions. There seems to be a complete reversal from the previous election were the Conservative base had direction and felt united and the Dems were falling all over themselves. Now Obama and his horde of greenie socialist have lead a coup in the left and overthrew the Clintons and the other ‘90s era type Democrats. The Right however is still spinning from the fall out from the economy, gas prices, the Iraq war, and the Bush Stigma. John McCain is the perfect candidate for the Republicans of today because nobody is sure were he stands and is different from Republicans in the past. Some republicans still favor a strong central government, big spending and support religious issues; however, since the Bush fiasco it appears this base has been shaken up and could not even get their own candidates the nomination . So the Right is left with a Maverick and the common hatred for the Dems. In both parties their appears to be two competing factions. Obama and his socialist weenies appear to have the upper hand on the left but the lines are still being drawn and the dust is still settling on the Right to tell what is what just yet. If the Religious neo-conservatives still come out on top their strangle hold on the Republican party will have at least been weakened if not abolished all together. Their seems to be room for a lot of cross over as well; with the left being more religious and the right becoming more socialist. I could be wrong about all of this but if one thing is certain its that both parties are undergoing change and we are going to experience different animals then what we have faced in the past. I myself will be voting for McCain for the same reason a lot of Objectivist are voting for Obama. I believe McCain has no real agenda is looking for a nice keystone towards the end of his career before he retires. Hell, he doesn’t even want a second term, does this sound like a guy who wants to shake things up? Obama on the other hand is a man on a mission and has a thirst for power as well as to enforce his socialist policies. Objectivist in the US would be wise to recognize the change in the political wind and adjust their political standings to compensate for the change. Keep in mind these are not the wimpy Dems that the Republicans have been kicking around for the last decade. This new left is Dangerous!!!
  19. The old British tactic of divide and rule!!
  20. Someone should conduct a study showing how much less carbon emissions there would be if all the viros jumped off a cliff. Come on guys its good for the planet! Don’t be greedy and selfish and Jump!! Their slogan could be “Save the Earth, Jump of a Cliff today!!"
  21. Here is a story about a company called Psystar that is infringing on Apple’s software agreement by selling cheap generic PC’s with Apple software. Apple' has a very specific end-user licensing agreement specifically forbids installing its OS on Non-Apple hardware. "Apple versus Psystar is a high stakes case--and not just for the parties involved. If Psystar prevails, it could open the door for other PC makers, including major vendors like Dell (Dell) and HP (NYSE: HPQ), to offer Mac clones. Such a development could undermine Apple's main business model--which relies on Apple's perceived right to dictate which software products can run on its hardware." Last July filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Psystar. Psystar is now claiming that the license terms violate U.S. antitrust laws and claims that Apple has "anticompetitive practices". Apple spends a lot of money on their R&D and takes a lot more risk in the industry and looks to make their profits by making a large margin on their hardware. However if companies like Psystar are able to thumb their noses at Apple user agreement their ramifications could be wide spread. Let’s hold our breath and see if the courts will up hold Apples right to sell their software were, how and to whom they please.
