  1. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27681666/ It's all about the plankton blooms sucking oxygen out of the water.
  2. I thought this was a strange place to find a reference to Objectivism. Maybe the site owner is Objectivist? http://www.roofhelp.com/glossary/glossary_o.htm
  3. I'm trying to understand the advantage of marriage for gay people, especially objectivist gay people. If 2 gay people choose to spend the rest of their lives together, why do they need a special ceremony provided by a church or a special piece of paper from the government? Why can't they just agree to spend the rest of their lives together?
  4. What is the primary reason gay people want to get married? Religious reasons? Or legal reasons?
  5. Pope congratulates Obama Agence France-Presse First Posted 22:41:00 11/05/2008 ROME—Pope Benedict XVI sent a telegram of congratulations Wednesday to Barack Obama to hail the "historic occasion" of his election as US president, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said. The Roman Catholic pontiff expressed to Obama "his blessing so that God will support him and the American people, and that all people of goodwill can work to build a world of peace, solidarity and justice," Lombardi said. The text of the telegram, sent to Obama via the US ambassador to the Holy See, is not being made public "because it is a personal message," the spokesman added.
  6. Sounds like sacrificing the present in hopes that it might eventually result in a better future. Unfortunately, I live in the United States, right here, right now, not in an idealogical future that may never happen.
  7. I think they already know that what they're offering is not what people want. I don't think they're interested in what people want. I think they're interested in obtaining more power, more control and more money in their own pockets. I think that's why they became politicians in the first place.
  8. I'm not speaking for you, I said "many of the 'Objectivists' on this forum". "Many" is not the same as "K-Mac". And as the OP explained, abstaining is no different than voting for Obama.
  9. Tell that to George Washington. The American Revolution was not won with free speech or a free economy. It was won with muskets, bayonets, cannons, rifles, pistols and swords.
  10. I agree with what you've said and I will be voting for McCain. Many of the "Objectivists" on this forum are simply following the leader (Leonard Peikoff) with blind faith and rationalizing his idea that voting for a Communist is better than voting for someone who claims to be religious (even though Obama and Biden also claim to be religious). Not to mention that Biden is Roman Catholic, so if Obama is elected, Protestants, Catholics and Communists can unite in their quest for global government forced altruism.
  11. Also from wikipedia: Barr would later reverse his position on medical marijuana, joining MPP as a lobbyist five years later. In a June 4, 2008 interview with Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report, Barr confirmed that he now supports ending marijuana prohibition, as well as the War on Drugs for which he once vehemently fought. At the 2008 Libertarian National Convention, he apologized for the part of the Defense of Marriage Act which prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. He now opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment, contending it is a violation of states' rights.
  12. From Wikipedia: Barr also joined the Young Democrats of America, and rallied against the Vietnam War. His parents disapproved, and threatened to cut off financial support if he continued his "flaming liberal" activities. During this time, Barr's mother introduced him to the work of Ayn Rand. This fostered a new-found appreciation for conservatism, and prompted Barr to join the Young Trojan Republican Club. Barr advocates the repeal of the 16th Amendment, which gives the U.S. Congress the power to levy an income tax without apportionment. As an alternative, he proposes a form of consumption tax, such as the FairTax. He also favors drastic reductions in government spending and the elimination of corporate welfare. On December 12, 2006, Barr became a regional representative on the Libertarian National Committee, representing the Party's Southeast Region. Barr said: "I'm happy to announce that I am now a proud, card-carrying Libertarian who is committed to helping elect leaders who will strive for smaller government, lower taxes and abundant individual freedom."
  13. Bob Barr = Objectivist? Article written by Bob Barr: http://www.bobbarr2008.com/articles/93/pro...ting-terrorism/ Quote from article: Liberty is not an afterthought, but the very essence of our civilization. The philosopher Ayn Rand spoke of "the process of setting man free from men." Our Founding Fathers understood that. The Bill of Rights protects it. But the current administration and many others, including Sen. John McCain, appear to disdain it. Only the American people can truly re-establish our society's foundation of freedom. That is the American Solution. Bob Barr is a former member of the House of Representatives and is running for president as the nominee of the Libertarian Party.
  14. I also recognized the saviors mother-in-law and the guy wearing a suit that was arguing with the leader of the good guys towards the beginning of the show but don't remember what shows or movies I've seen them in.
  15. The savior was the guy with the wrinkled forehead from the original Beverly Hills 90210 show.
  16. I saw it also. I think the quote was "Those who deny it cannot be conquered by it". The lady with the black hair (good guy) said it at the end.
  17. I'm glad you call it a business, because that's exactly what it is. Speed limits 20-30 mph lower than they should be have nothing to do with defending the life or property of citizens. Speed limits like this only exist so politicians, judges and police officers can screw citizens and provide themselves with job security.
  18. This link you posted specifies that the fastest instantaneous speed recorded is 12.1 m/s which equals 27 mph.
  19. 25 mph is a ridiculous speed limit. A human being can run faster than this. Ask the judge if you deliver pizza on foot and exceed 25 mph if you will get a ticket. In the last few months I've received 2 speeding tickets, both on the same road. Road is a 6 lane highway, speed limit should be around 70 mph, but in some areas for no reason I can understand, is 40 mph! Court is only open on Wednesdays during work hours and tickets were $85 each so I just paid them. I'm not going to lose half a days pay and surround myself with disgusting lawyers, cops and judges for 3 hours to save $85. You just have to admit to yourself that the world we live in is full of mooching communist losers. Trying to argue with these people using reality based facts and logical arguments is a complete waste of time and effort.
  20. www.drhurd.com has a bunch of similar type books, as well as a "Daily Dose of Reason," based on Objectivist principles.

  22. Being selfless according to a particular religion doesn't require government force and can be 100% voluntary. It is quite possible to believe in god and live your own personal life according to the rules of your religion, but also support freedom, individual rights and separation of church and state, as has been proven by the founding fathers of the United States of America. Socialism requires government force (it can't and won't happen voluntarily). And it can be supported by anyone and everyone, regardless of faith, as has been shown in this thread and LP's DIM hypothesis.
  23. But please know, whether you believe campaign contributions are speech or property, that I learned to love very dearly the right of free expression when I lived without that freedom for a while a long time ago. John McCain It's not social issues I care about. John McCain Only an a**hole would put together a budget like this... I wouldn't call you an a**hole unless you really were an a**hole. John McCain You know that old Beach Boys song, Bomb Iran? Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran. John McCain It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don't have enemies. That's not the world we live in. And until Sen. Obama understands that reality, the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has strength, judgment and determination to keep us safe. John McCain We spent $3 million to study the DNA of bears in Montana. I don’t know if that was a paternity issue or a criminal issue. John McCain You know the difference between a lawyer and a catfish? One is a scum-sucking bottom-dweller. The other is a fish. John McCain
  24. Mentioning the following would probably not hurt your grade: Altogether Hitler’s killing machine murdered 5 million Jews, and 7 million Christians — a little published fact that caused Jewish historian Max Dimont to declare that “the world blinded itself to the murder of Christians” by Nazi Germany (Dimont, 1994, pp. 391-392). In Poland alone 881 Catholic priests were annihilated (Azar, 1990, p. 154). In time many more priests would end up in concentration camps.
  25. What class is this for? Has the school taught you anything about the history or philosophy of separation of church and state? I think the best way to go about this would be to get as good an understanding as possible of what kind of problems are caused as a result of NOT separating church and state. That will give you all the answers you need to not just write an essay, but an entire book. Here are some links that may help. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_church_and_state http://candst.tripod.com/tnppage/qmadison.htm http://candst.tripod.com/tnppage/qjeffson.htm http://spindleworks.com/library/peet/german.htm You can look into how the Tsarist government in Russia gave official state backing to the Orthodox Church and how that may have influenced the end of the Russian empire. You can look into how the Soviet government was anti-religion and what affect this had on the churches. You can look into how the German government collects religious taxes to finance Christian churches. You can look into the relationship between the German Nazi party and the catholic church, especially in regards to how Hitler hated Christianity but realized he couldn't have risen to power without support of the catholic church.
