  1. I was raised a Jehovah's Witness as well. I have the same type of "Christian apologetic friends" still (it's impossible to get rid of them).
  2. I have another example of how recreational marijuana use can effect a family. Two boys of the same family with the same hair color, same height, same build, same intelligence etc. both decide to start smoking marijuana. One of them decides to stop. The other continues to smoke however. The non-smoker stayed in school and went to college and is now the president of the United States. The smoker dropped out of school made bad friends and became a violent terrorist in Pakistan. The lesson? Smoking marijuana not only ruins your life but it also turns you into a terrorist.
  3. Did they re-release it? Or are you guys talking about DVD?
  4. I have always felt that telemarketers calling my house felt like an invasion. The only way I could ever stop this was by pulling out the cord. "If I wanted insurance I would have called you." I remember saying that once to a man who called me while I was watching an exciting part of a movie. When the Do Not Call list came about I signed up immediately. Now I don't have to worry about being interrupted while watching TV to hear an important message about how to refinance my credit.
  5. Thank you for recommending this. I will find it and download it immediately.
  6. I don't mind commercials at all. Lately they have been more clever and some have even been actually funny. I used to get up and do other things or change the channel during the commercial break but I now find myself more willing to watch the commercials. I hate pop-ups however. If a web site is going to advertise I prefer it when they put the advertisements in the bars on the web sites. The thing that bothers me so much about pop-ups is that so many of them cause problems with my computer. Many of them don't go away when I click the 'close' button, and some of them continuosly come back after I hit the 'close' button. Some pop-ups also ask if you want to install things on your computer. This is very sneaky because in almost every case these programs were not good to install (except things like Direct X etc.) Many contain Spyware and Adware which is extremely hard to get off your computer. I am still trying to get an Adware off my computer called Offer Optimizer. It decides what ads I would most like to see and shows me them. It also slows my internet connection down. So that is why I hate pop-ups. Not because they advertise, but because I believe they do so unethicaly.
  7. I imagine it will be very easy for someone with radiation poisoning to grow a pair of balls, well rather I mean another pair of balls.
  8. The Great Depression occured during a capitalist economy but certainly not because of it. And government intervention coinciding with recovery does not mean that government intervention caused recovery. We can credit recovery from The Great Depression to the massive production leading up to World War II. Therefore it can be concluded that if we had left the economy alone we would have achieved a relatively similar recovery.
  9. A "true egoist" would pass the bum on the street and not even notice that he was begging for money. The question of whether or not to help him would not even come up in his mind.
  10. Just as a side note, I live about 2 miles outside of Palmyra and every year the Mormons make their pilgrimidge to Palmyra. They come in droves. I can always tell when they are coming when I start to see an unusual number of Utah license plates.
  11. have you read Ray Bradbury? if not i recommend him very much. also i recommend a writer named Aldous Huxley, specifically a book named Brave New World. i don't read much sci-fi so thats all i can recommend to you.
  12. just wondering actually, it crossed my mind...
  13. the united states did buy land that states occupied the civil war. the only states you speak of were the thirteen colonies and there were more than thirteen states involved in the civil war. most notably states created from the louisiana purchase. also when did the eminent domain law come about?
  14. this is just a thought. in the case of the civil war wouldnt the federal government have had legal rights over the land that the states were seceding with? not to mention military bases and other federally owned facilities that would basically be lost once the state seceded, the financial loss would be astounding (though not as great as fighting a massive war). my point is that the states seceding would be stealing from the federal government. that would be justification for the government to take back their property. some might also argue that when they signed the constitution it was a binding agreement and they could not ever withdraw.
  15. explain to me why states dont have the right to secede or explain to me why the government doesnt have the right to force them to stay, because both happened. states seceded and the government forced them to stay.
  16. it was much more complicated than that, i just didnt feel like going into detail.
  17. a state has the right to secede just as the nation has the right to fight to keep it in the union. also portions of a state have the right to disagree and be broken up (ex. west virginia). if the popular vote in an area is that the people wish to leave then it is their right to do so. However the government still has the right to claim the land as its own. this is obviously how the civil war began.
  18. what constitutes being an individual? from what i am reading from you i am lead to believe all one needs to do is be born without someone else physically attached to them. in that case i'm going to tell all of the people at church today that i was wrong about them. but then again i always did feel that refering to them as sheep felt wrong.
  19. of all the people i have met in my experience only a handful have been individuals. some seem to consciously give up their identities, others sub-consciously. but to say that all people are individuals seems like a generalization.
  20. i thought this at least was quite accurate. it seemed similar to the school that i went to. i laughed out loud quite a few times during some of the school scenes because it reminded me of past situations. in particular my school used to have terrible speakers come quite often. there was also a required course very similar to that that donnie is seen taking (the course about fear). As for competent teachers, my school was beginning to get more of them as i was leaving. i dont think that drew barrymore was the only competent teacher however, the science teacher (cant remember his name, he was in E.R.) was quite good.
  21. this is just a bit of greek history/historical contribution i thought people might appreciate. there was a greek astronomer/scientist (i believe he was named aristarchus) who discovered that the sun was the center of the solar system. i always like to tell people this when they say that ancient people believed the world was on the backs of turtles etc.
  22. i do not understand why this is necessarily a bad thing. its just some people having fun and unless it somehow hurts people (?) i dont see why it would be bad.
  23. if youre interested in seeing serpico its been playing recently on AMC. i cant give you an exact time but i imagine their website should be able to.
  24. i doubt that there is any communist propoganda in this movie. i dont know how they could actually fit it in considering that china became a communist state in the middle 20th century and this is much earlier. if somebody goes to see this movie and feels that they are being fed communist propoganda then they are overly sensitive and clearly seeing something that isnt there.
