If only I could be so fortunate!

V-Day can be a lot of fun! Unless of course you're snowed in without someone you want to celebrate the day with.

This is an interesting topic. Last year I attended a conference in which I competed in public speaking. I thought my speech was very good, but I didn't win. When I received the judges' comments several weeks later, the female judges commented that I should not have used "man" to refer to humanity because "What about the women?" I was surprised that these people actually "qualified" to be judges. If I were a guy, I could possibly understand how a female judge might misinterpret the word "man" to be sexist if other things in the speech indicated this, as well. But I'm a girl: why would I not include my own gender when I say the word "man?" It made no sense. That was the first time I was exposed to this kind of nonsense. When I was writing my speech, I couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams that the word "man" could arouse feminist angst. If I want to win next time, I suppose I must say "man and woman" or simply "people," though the latter does not have the specific emphasis that I feel the word "man" exudes.

Idea: the Rational Man's Library
Mimpy replied to DavidV's topic in Website Policy and Announcements
I think this is a great idea. I know at least I would read these pieces. -

Abigail Adams actually revived their friendship through letters to Jefferson. It was pretty amazing. -
Why did Rand view Kant as evil?
Mimpy replied to Lord Poppycock's topic in Questions about Objectivism
How did he come up with the formulations, though? Why the Formula of Universal Law vs. the Formula of Pink Bunnies (just an example!)? How did he justify his specific formulations? -
Why did Rand view Kant as evil?
Mimpy replied to Lord Poppycock's topic in Questions about Objectivism
What is the Categorical Imperative based on? I know the three formulations, but how did Kant come up with them? Why are there only three? How did he argue that his three formulations would suffice to live by? I'm just curious. -
I'm the same way, Emily. I'm actually in high school now and as my philosophical understanding has expanded, I have begun to feel "out of the loop" in my friend circle. I am not abandoning anyone, though, because I only have a couple months left before college....and that's where I hope to spend most of my time with people who view life the same way I do. In the mean time, I'm enjoying the values my friends and I share together and am open to meeting new people whom I can connect with more deeply.

Thanks, Kendall.

Coincidentally, Rob, I was thinking along the same lines as you today. I'm glad you posted this because I, too, am interested in how to deal with the "evil" around us. Several people on this board have hinted in other topics their patience with other people when it comes to understanding Objectivism. That is truly an admirable quality: I seem to lack that patience. I do try to explain my point of view but most of the time the other party is not interested in learning and expanding its own knowledge. The emotional detachment is even more difficult. I think it stems, however, not directly from a desire to see "justice in the outer world" but for a more selfish reason. I desire other people to believe in the things I believe to start a relationship (does not necessarily have to be romantic) with them...share knowledge, learn more from each other, and mutually grow. But thanks for posting first. Can't wait to read the responses.

I've dated guys that weren't Objectivists. I'm currently single, so it's obvious that those relationships did not work out. I wouldn't be opposed to dating guys who weren't Objectivists, though. I could never pursue a serious relationship with them if they did not hold the same values as I, but I'd definitely be willing to learn more about them and share what I believe. If we were diametrically opposite, I think a couple dates would be enough to figure it out.

I didn't mean I wanted to be immortal. I was using JMeganSnow's definition of "living indefinitely" from the last page (Post 2): that I had the choice to live as long as I found value in living.
-
Gosh, I would love to live indefinitely. There's so much I want to do!

Whose "survival" are you talking about? Dave Odden had it right: if the innovation advances your own life(in monetary or spiritual terms), then its creation would certainly be justified.

non-contradictor said that you can't buy it from Border's or B&N unless you pre-order. That certainly wasn't the case for me...I bought my copy at B&N right after midnight. The store was open way past its regular hours and was having a party for anyone and everyone who wanted to celebrate the release at midnight. I went just to see the fun! I hadn't pre-ordered, but some of the people had and they got their books first. I got mine around 1 in the morning, so that wasn't too bad. They had plenty of copies for everyone. If you're really into HP, I'd suggest a release party like the one I attended. At least 500 people were there...lots of food, drinks, and good times! Also, many non-bookstores carry the novel, as well, and they usually don't get sold out and are much cheaper, too. I remember seeing the last book at Best Buy the day it was released, at least 25% less expensive than what it was at bookstores. So check that out, too!

If you had to write one bill, what would it be?
Mimpy replied to realitycheck44's topic in Political Philosophy
I like this idea the best. ... So today my gov teacher told us that starting tomorrow we'd be doing a Congressional simulation and we'd have to propose bills and stuff. So this topic is quite exciting. -

Oooh, we're doing a simulation right now, too...we're supposed to be representing a township and begging for a grant to do something positive. -
This is the first time I'm hearing Dr. Brook's voice. He's very confident!! And I just love that accent. Finkle was a mess compared to Dr. Brook's general composure.

When babies are born, they only have their primitive brains. So at one point we are all equal. But then with each passing second, the cortex develops, enabling concept formation, thoughts, ideas, morality, etc.
