  1. Just to clarify, I wasn't commenting on your post. I don't have any issues with what you said, I just don't have any with what Zip said, or how he said it, either.
  2. I agree, Ben. Thanks for the reminder. My basic thought on this...it would've been in Rand's rational self-interest to live in a society where people embrace the philosophy of Objectivism. This is why I try to spread the philosophy whenever I can. It will only help me in the long run. I just recently watched the documentary, A Sense of Life, which is about Rand. The movie follows her life story, including why she decides to write nonfiction. You should check it out. It's done very well and is very interesting.
  3. It's interesting that after I read the initial post, I thought the same thing as Zip, but I would not have said it that way. After further consideration, I realized, that is exactly how we should say it, rationally and honestly. We shouldn't sugar coat it. We all have that basic choice to make. If we choose not to live, then we die. If we choose to live, then we must take action to stay alive and thrive. I think Rand said something to that effect in one of the first few essays of Virtue of Selfishness, but I don't recall which one. (Probably "The Objectivist Ethics" based on the following quotes I found in the Lexicon.) If the original poster hasn't read that recently, perhaps it's time to revisit it? The Virtue of Selfishness “The Objectivist Ethics,” The Virtue of Selfishness, 16. The Virtue of Selfishness “The Objectivist Ethics,” The Virtue of Selfishness, 16.
  4. This is so ridiculous and out there that it barely warrants a response other than I am under an allergist care for my nasal allergies. I have taken allergy pills that don't do much for me, now I take one that does. I couldn't breathe before, now I can. When my leg was broke, I went to an orthopedic, had surgery and have since recovered. I can walk without a limp and have had no issues. I couldn't walk before, now I can. So why is it not safe for me to go to the doctor? Are you suggesting it would be better for me to never walk again and not breathe through my nose? Furthermore, I say that most, if not all, of the problems in the medical community are caused by government intervention and frivolous lawsuits, by people that expect it to be free of cost and free of error.

    The Purpose of Sex

That's awesome. I had a discussion with a young person in chat once about the value of sex and romantic relationships in general. I couldn't seem to get anywhere with her in our conversation, so I just gave up. Some things you just have to experience to understand, I guess.
  6. hey beautiful lady, hope you're living 'la vie en rose' ;)

  7. It looks like a business or museum to me. No cushy comforts I expect in a home. I think the place has potential, it's just boring right now. For example, the pool area in front...I'm not going to enjoy the pool as much sitting on the hard concrete reading a book as I would with in a cushioned lounge chair, with a cocktail on the table next to me as a palm tree sways in the breeze over my head. It would be even better with a second lounge chair for my husband to relax in next to me. That is a home. Last weekend I watched the Rand documentary, Sense of Life. They showed a picture of a house Ayn and Frank owned in California. It had very nice, modern architecture, but they had it decorated with plants, art and comfortable furniture which made it livable. The house Zip posted has great architecture, it's just not livable, in my opinion. I would make it better with proper furnishings, art, plants, etc.
  8. Granted, you don't want job security or salary alone to determine your career path and I agree that you need to find something you love or like to do; however, it's important that you choose a career keeping all three in mind so that you will #1) have a job/work to do and #2) receive an income sufficient to support a lifestyle that you will be happy with. My ex loved graphic arts, but the jobs were few and far between, didn't last very long and he didn't get paid enough to sustain his lifestyle during the periods which he was unemployed. It was a financial disaster and neither of us were happy, that's for sure.
  9. That's weird! It used to be. I guess MLK Day replaced it???
  10. Ahem! Easter is always on a Sunday, so the federal holiday is Good Friday (the Friday before.) That is a Christian holiday.
  11. I love having fresh-cut flowers around. I think it's a tribute to science and mankind. The new varieties they've come up with and the ability to grow them year-round in controlled environments, I find very interesting. Yet another way man is able to shape the world around him to accommodate his needs and wants. Plus, they smell good and look amazing. I enjoy potted plants and gardening as well, but it's kinda hard to have a big rose bush indoors.
  12. Howdy and welcome to these parts!
  13. Well, I can agree with her, although I think there is a compromise. For example, the picture you posted...looks like a great house, but it is kinda cold and uninviting; however, add some tall plants and potted flowers around the pool area, some cushy out door furniture, etc., and it could become very inviting and warm, while remaining very modern. Same w/ the inside, really.
  14. This poll by Pew is interesting. If you roll your mouse over the various words used to describe Obama, you can see how the results have changed since September.
  15. And now there will be more money for audits! (For certain people, I'm sure...certainly not for cabinet members.)
  16. His denial of my right to my own life is one reason I don't care for him. (He's anti-abortion.)
  17. It's certainly possible to be attracted (or disgusted) by fictional characters. Are you saying that you're not?
  18. Nope. Gotta work for what you want. No way around it. (Not for very long anyway.)
  19. The only piece of new furniture I've purchased was the bed. Everything else was either given to me or purchased at a garage sale and fixed up/painted, etc. My ex had a bad habit of being unemployed, so I've not been able to really enjoy the fruits of my labor until the past few years. (And I had a bad habit of allowing him to do that to me. No more!) For those of you looking to furnish or decorate your homes on a budget, CraigsList frequently has free or cheap decent stuff and freecycle.org is ALL free stuff. Garage sales and consignment shops in high-end areas of town are usually a gold mine as well.
