  1. wow! beautiful. thanks sophia, i've always been a big bernini fan now HE is a true master!
  2. Ironically enough, I found Frudakis' "Freedom" a year or two ago and loved it.
  3. Venus Dawn Evening Mood Admiration The Abduction of Psyche Nymphs and Satyr The Danse Innocence William-Adolphe Bouguereau (November 30, 1825 – August 19, 1905) was a French academic painter. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he won the Prix de Rome in 1850 and his realistic genre paintings and mythological themes were exhibited at the annual exhibitions of the Paris Salon for his entire working life. Although he fell into obscurity in the early 20th century, due perhaps to his staunch opposition to the Impressionists, there is a new appreciation for his work. In his lifetime, Bouguereau painted eight hundred and twenty-six paintings.
  4. The contorted bodies remind me of this: Dante and Virgil in Hell -- Bouguereau [edited to identify the painting]
  5. I didn't even know what you meant by "SF" until I read your whole post. I saw "San Francisco" not sci-fi. I'm sure I'm not the only one who did this.
  6. I've chosen to stay out of this fray, though I do have my own opinions about art and what all of you have put forth in your aruments. Regardless, I just wanted to say that you can't really compare the "graspability" of a piece of visual art to a piece of written art. One uses a single, static visual image and the other uses a plethora of explicit concepts (words) ... they are like apples and oranges when it comes to being able to discern meaning from them.
  7. This is a really cute and poignant commercial about inspiring kids to read. ^^
  8. I put the monopoly money in reference to the actual "worth" of the dollar, not aesthetic comparisons.

  10. by what means do you suppose that you know the terms in which most photographers think? by the quality of their work? by the subject of their photographs? i don't think there's any way that you could make a broad, sweeping generalization like that unless you are a photography historian. There is nothing in Adams' quote that negates the essential reason why Rand did not consider photography art: It is not selective reproduction. Adams is only talking about the subtleties of how to alter the properties of the image-record that the camera takes. Selecting the thing you're going to take a picture of, or how long to expose it is not selective recreation.
  11. feminine hunky romantic (c'mon look at his buttox! them be sexy!)
  12. Nobody has yet mentioned that Ayn Rand's favorite painting was by none other than the king of surrealism, Salvidore Dali. He's even more surrealist and has a wicked sense of life. "Ayn Rand" by Jeff Britting
  13. Can you elaborate as to why? I guess I don't see it.
  14. I liked Andrei very much as a character. More than Leo, he was a real jerk.
  15. cool, thanks for the extra link! el dorado neat!
  16. His work is "surrealism" but I enjoy his sense of life very much, and can sense a kind of Romanticism towards man.
  17. my thoughts exactly. on a side note: i don't think we were being mean (aka "not being nice") we all have vested interest in the production of this film, and our opinions of a particular person's ability to portray a character we all love and cherish has nothing to do with "niceness" or not. how many of us have poo-poo'ed on the angelina jolie choice? i don't see how this is any different. i stand by my word; from what it looks like, i do not like the casting of this clay guy as galt. i would have prefered a young, strapping chap with piercing eyes ... like Henry Caville vs. you tell me
  18. I am looking to show some documentaries at my college as a way to garner interest in our Objectivist club. I'm looking for non-conspiracy-theory docs about relevant issues that are in line with Objectivist thought, such as pro-capitalist pro-free market films, etc. What are some documentaries that you would recommend we show that are good enough (and philosophically sound enough) to attach to our club name in hopes of attracting new members?
  19. I am the president of the Oist club at my University, and I'm looking for input from other group leaders, but this can apply to any Oist get together, not just college clubs. Anyone have advice / suggestions / tips on how to increase the interest in your local Oist group? How do you reach out to potential members? How do you find those who have a good sense-of-life / correct (implicit) premises, and convince them to come to a meeting / look into Oism? Do you cull members from other related groups (eg a Libertarian group or a Philosophy salon)?
  20. I remember a few years ago coming across a website that was an organization of G&L Oists. The Rattigan Society Foundation The Rattigan Society Foundation for gay and lesbian Objectivists is devoted to providing an alternative to the collectivist voices of the gay and lesbian community. the website is down atm, but i hope that is something of interest
  21. D: that means he IS John Galt and I can't hold out hope for a young hottie
