Who gets your vote on Tuesday?
FrolicsomeQuipster replied to softwareNerd's topic in US Elections 2004/2008/2012/2016
Dutchy here, though in our latest election I voted libertarian, as of yet I don't get any serious anarchist vibes from the ones over here. -
Gifted unfairly? Edit: I really like the looks of the city.

Starting a Project - An Objectivist Bedtime Story
FrolicsomeQuipster replied to Richard Novak's topic in Productivity
I think The Candle Makers Petition of Frédéric Bastiat could easily be turned into a children book. -
Nice. On the radio show Just Right I've heard about another idea for a "Its a wonderful life" spin off but which hasn't to my knowledge been worked out yet. A revision of the original story one the protagonist gets a vision of what his life could have been if he didn't sacrifice himself and didn't give up on his dreams. I'd love to see that one worked out.

Side note, why doesn't the Wiki article on Epistemology have any references to the Objectivist theory?

Libertarianism vs Objectivism
FrolicsomeQuipster replied to Dániel Boros's topic in Political Philosophy
Daniel, if the first responsibility of a government is self defense how would wars and the way they are fought not be one of the most important things? Its not that libertarians lack interest in philosophy as such, its that they specifically don't agree that the way that you achieve a conclusion is part of the conclusion. Without the reasoning behind why one should support free markets you get governments cracking down on the bigger companies in the name of competition. Without the reason behind general nonaggression you get a military that is held back until the enemy crosses your border or fires its first missile. -
How do you care for your Rand books?

There's people who believe in a proper stacking order. http://www.myjewishlearning.com/texts/About_Jewish_Texts/Jewish_Books.shtml Some would even go so far as to give special treatments to things containing G--t's name. http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/475304/jewish/Proper-Disposal-of-Holy-Objects.htm -
Should abortion be legal until the moment of birth?
FrolicsomeQuipster replied to Kate87's topic in Political Philosophy
How about we extend some leniency both ways, so if the mother dies during childbirth the baby can't be accused of manslaughter. -
Should abortion be legal until the moment of birth?

Just more reasons to look forward to cloning vats that can create healthier babies then female bellies can. -
This looks like one of those legal issues that make me glad I'm not a lawyer. And what if the thing that's stolen is an organ?

I think undue sympathy for animals is a bigger problem and can often be a sign of antisocial behavior. I've heard even Objectivist "animal lovers" proclaim at least the urge to violently violate the rights of those who treat animals badly. The amount of psychopaths who start out on small animals is in my opinion insignificant compared to the masses pushing for animal rights and the loony vegans who subject their children to malnutrition. Only when an animal can be classified as "cute" do I ever start to feel any sort of empathy, most of the time I prefer plants. Intrusive insects I outright hate and hostile microscopic live doesn't even get far enough trough my filters to even register for feelings of animosity. And then there's the exception for vermin regardless of their cute status. Really whenever I think about feelings of empathy for animals its only either companion animals or useful ones that where I can agree with the idea. And as I've already excluded whole genera, animals may be to broad a term, maybe "large mammals" would be better.

Places with anti gun laws have more knife crime. And everyone who colt made equal would not helped by carrying around a sword.

Personally I thought that Mass Effect's mechanic was one of the worst ones cause just being somewhat rude got you Renegade while being polite got you Paragon. As if etiquette is part of morality. I do like the idea of a system where previous choices determine future options. Maybe in a game with fable like time-skips where if you were a total Toohey as a kid you don't get the choice to keep certain treasures to yourself if people ask you to share.

Lots of video games have a karma bar where being generally nice for a while can make up for burning down an orphanage. Now there may be some Mumbojumboists who are perfectly fine with that but I'm guessing most of you aren't. How do you play them? I used to find it a lot easier on the nerves to go with a generally super jebus path where my character sometimes ends up frigging glowing. If I did try out the bad road I'd turn down the sound so I wouldn't have to hear everyone wailing about it. But lately I've been finding it easier to stomp on fictional characters that talk back to me the same way I'd used to build death-coasters in roller coaster tycoon. If only Sith deal in absolutes and Objectivists only deal in absolutes, then hello fellow dark knights!

Can one be a Freemason and remain an Objectivist?
FrolicsomeQuipster replied to Edwin's topic in Questions about Objectivism
Lets start a secret club of our own! Our instruction pamphlet could be "Protocols of the Elders of Freedom". -
A government should hold a monopoly on the retaliatory use of force and that monopoly is not an initiation of force in itself its the individuals who it retaliates against that initiate force. The only reason I can see why you'd want a different service holding a monopoly on retaliatory force would be if you'd also want them to initiate it. Go ahead and start a preventative business if you want though.

Unless it has the face of a dead communist on it or something like that I only really care if it's comfy.
