Has anyone here checked out the previews for the upcoming ABC television series V?

It appears to be a re-imagining of the original 80s miniseries about how America and the world falls under the fascist grip of an alien race of "Visitors."

What struck me about the previews for this new V series is that there seems to be an underlying theme about not trusting those in power who promise "hope" and "change." Hmmm...

Anyway, check out the show's site here:

I watched it back when it first came out, it used to be one of my favorite series.

I liked the mini-series. The series that spawned off it got too mystical, repetitive and overall pointless.

I want to point out in the mini-series the V stood for Victory.

Interesting to see what they'll do with it---

Going by past experience with Hollywood, I'm laying odds they'll spoil it.

though if Morena is in it, I'll definitely watch it. She doesn't get as many parts as she deserves.

True. But she's getting typecast as a sexy, alien villain. She played that type very well in Stargate: SG1

I really liked the first episode of the new V series. I think it's off to a promising start.

My jaw dropped at the part in the episode where it is apparently revealed that the Visitors intend to use their advanced science and medical technology to provide mankind with "universal healthcare" as a crucial step in their plan to bring the world under their control. DAMN!! :dough:

You know whats spooky? I missed the live broadcast on the abc website (I just learned that apprently it has not aired yet? weird), so I went onto megavideo to watch the recording and all the parts where the V make these kind of claims were edited out by the person who recorded it! Looks like the Obama nuts are up to their tricks again! I wonder how long this series will last..........

I watched the original V with rapt fascination (the mini series that is), then with growing annoyance as the TV series went to crap.

So far, "V" 2009 strikes me as a simple repaint of the old mini series. Nothing was surprising or terribly inspired, IMO.

BSG was a complete recreation of the concept. While the ending was terrible, the series itself started out great. V? Not so much, IMO. Definitely not an original take on an old story. If they're saving the best of their creativity for later, well - here's hoping they keep their audience until then.

I agree with that assessment. I did like the part about health care though. :pimp:

Additional thoughts.

They crammed way too much into it.

That 1 episode had plot "twists" that could have come out over weeks and weeks! In the original mini series, we didn't learn the V's were actually EVIL until the very very end of episode 1, which expanded to a tv series timeline should at least be the end of week 2...

If it were me, I'd have had the V's look perfectly good week 1. Week 2, introduce the resistance but make them seem crazy. Week 3, reveal that the V's are evil. 4: That they're lizards. 5: THat there are good V's. And so forth...

I gather the show was suspended for retooling after the first four episodes. ABC just brought in a new showrunner. The conspiracy-minded will wonder whether this is politically motivated...

4: That they're lizards.

Well, this is just going to vindicate all the people out there that think everyone involved in global leadership is a lizard person. Seriously, a lot of people on the Internet believe this.

Why Lizards? I don't know. But it's a common theme in conspiracy circles.

Okay...just watched the pilot.

I agree that the message in it is good, but for the most part, I agree with Greebo. They blew their load on the first episode. (hey that rhymed)

They honestly could have made that one episode in to 3 or 4.

They want to put out a message of pro-human, anti-socialism, don't trust people because they "talk good" and look "perty", (I mean if that was the case I would trust every word out of Morena Baccarin mouth.), but it's a series, so there is more time be settle with it...And this show is not settle.

It blatantly calls out the alien "healing centers" as "Universal Healthcare", which, in a way is sort of funny in...uh...well, a not funny way...But it's going to loose a lot of it's audience. Liberals are sensitive little buggers.

Here is this great vehicle to reach a ton of people with a great message, but if the "vehicle" is a tank, you're going scare those poor little emotional liberals away, and give them more nonsense ammo.

I watched it this afternoon. I thought it was quite good stylistically, but agree it was rather smashed together. For example, before the first commercial break, that could have been an episode in and of itself with creative writers.

I doubted that the message would be overtly politically as some had said, but wow, it really did smash you in the head with it. I still find it doubtful they will be doing much criticizing of the white house; this is Hollywood we're talking about.

It's true that the pilot had a lot stuffed into it. What series pilot doesn't? In order to attract an audience, the pilot has to present the most provoking aspects of the series. This not only encourages networks to air the series, but it sets up what audiences can expect and what may interest them. I thought the pilot for V did this exceptionally well. I left the television series wanting to know what is going to happen and what new twists were going to pop up.

I never saw the original V series... I wasn't born yet. But it seems to me that it's irrelevant how closely this series copies the original. This is an entirely new generation, an entirely new audience. Unless millions of Americans are series television buffs, I doubt they are even aware that this is a remake series and it won't affect potential enjoyment.
