She's an Objectivist now, and that and other videos from her were recommended via The Objectivist Standard. -
I should add that this occurring in Dearborn that the guy is an Arab and Muslim so the thought that this could have been some sort of possible passive terrorism that could be explained away was a possibility that's why I threw in that he did seem like a decent guy so hopefully that wasn't the case (š getting a blinking emoji from the hacking unit of the criminal organization as I'm typing this) and hopefully TSA and others in the government looked into that possibility. My friend (also an Arab Muslim originally from Syria) who owns that shop brought that up and said the window tinter who was was wearing his Boeing uniform and then showed me pictures from his phone as proof that he was the aircraft mechanic responsible for this before our short discussion on this subject and my quick assessment of his character as a result.

It shouldn't. My wording was specifically "the SpookyKitty *types*". Just gave an immediate example without listing all of the names from this forum who could benefit and others in general who are clearly confused and accept false and evil ideas on this subject. -

Why should the scope be limited to SpookyKitty? There might be other people reading who would be swayed by a rational argument even if SpookyKitty isn't. -
I actually recently spoke to the individual who made the mistake that lead to this door falling off. Besides being an aircraft mechanic he tints car windows at a car stereo shop in Dearborn where I have done work over the last month with a guy that owns a shop that I personally trained in the mid-2000's. Some sort of mistake was made and he still has his job and sounded sorry that it occurred, and also seemed like a decent guy.

The subject is specifically SpookyKitty's sensitivity to rational arguments. Therefore: do you have examples when she changed her opinion after such arguments? If you do, then this will show me wrong (I wrote: "What makes you think that this, or any other video, will change her position one iota?") -

Why wouldn't a short rational and to the point video of the facts of the situation from a girl that was also confused on this subject and corrected her thinking and then she explained why in detail not help correct the false premises that lead to the correct anti-evil position not help others quickly see and correct their own false premises? If a rational argument from someone who once held false premises that lead them to supporting evil in the past and how that person corrected those to become an excellent moral person that now supports and advocates the good via rational discussion of the truth and the good doesn't help correct false premises that lead people like them to openly support evil doesn't lead them to the truth and the good then society is doomed. -
Over at Vox is an article questioning how aircraft safety news has been reported lately:Image by mr_t_77, via Wikimedia Commons, license.Ever since the shocking January 5 incident in which a door plug fell out of a Boeing 737 Max 9 in midair, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the plane, many fliers have been jumpy. Their fears have been fueled by news sites that have been serving up incident after incident: a Boeing 737 Max 8 sliding off the runway in Houston, another 737 in Houston making an emergency return after flames were spotted spewing out of an engine, yet another in Newark reporting stuck rudder pedals, a Boeing 777 losing a tire shortly after takeoff from San Francisco, a 777 making an emergency landing in Los Angeles with a suspected mechanical issue. And so on and so on. So what's actually happening? Are more planes having incidents than ever before? Or are we just hearing about more incidents? bold added]Kelsey Piper argues that it is the latter, and has the statistics to back up that contention. In fact, this year, we're having about the usual number of the type of incident she ticks off above. Overall, flight remains a remarkably safe mode of travel:[W]hile the January door plug incident revealed some genuine and glaring failures in processes at Boeing, it's really hard to overstate how safe aviation is. In all of the incidents involving regularly scheduled US commercial aircraft over the 15 years from 2010 to 2024, there have been two passenger fatalities -- in about 8.75 trillion revenue passenger miles. That's a safety record of about one or two passenger fatalities per light-year traveled. [bold added]In light of this context, Piper asks whether journalists have a responsibility to not report such non-newsworthy events as the occasional lost tire or in-flight malfunction. It's a good question, and it reminds me of the analysis of our society's knowledge system in Alex Epstein's Fossil Future. Here, we're seeing serious issues with how research and dissemination are going wrong. (These parts of the knowledge system are interrelated: Piper's attempt at synthesis -- of reported incidents and actual safety -- is helping expose the other two problems here.) Piper doesn't touch on how evaluation is also going wrong right now, at the political level, but that's easy enough to see. Stories about the Boeing safety scandal discuss the real problem of Boeing having lost many experienced engineers and technicians over time -- but with some version of the profit vs safety canard, popping up, completely unquestioned, like a refrain. The dubious premise that having a deserved reputation for safety isn't a legitimate consideration for someone wanting to turn a profit will predictably cause a demand for more government oversight -- as if we'd be better off taking a page from the Soviets and running the industry like Aeroflot. (This doesn't mean that Boeing hasn't been badly-run in some respects, but blaming that on the profit motive is lazy, and will cause more trouble if the problem is in some way caused by government interference in the industry, such as its past "encouragement" of the merger of Boeing with MacDonnell-Douglas.) As with climate change and energy policy, so it is with aircraft safety and the economy: A problem has surfaced, but is being misreported and analyzed incorrectly. And the government is getting involved and, due in part to misevaluation, is in danger of causing real damage by applying an inappropriate, ham-fisted remedy to what could well amount to a fictitious problem, or the wrong problem. -- CAVLink to Original

HOW CAN OBJECTIVISM BECOME A DOMINANT IDEOLOGY?
tadmjones replied to rohintest's topic in Intellectuals and the Media
The digestion analogy was an example of how I understand Randās use of the word reason and the use of the words rational faculty, and frankly given it was off the top of my head , so to speak, it wasnāt terribly analogous. I just meant I was pretty sure they are/were used in the Oāist technical vernacular as fairly synonymous though perhaps one or the other would be āmoreā technically correct given various contexts. Richness of concepts comes from the autodidactic nature of the contents of our minds. According to Oāism one starts tabula rasa and via conscious application of our innate faculties and capabilities create and acquire oneās own knowledge. The richness would connote all the explicit and implicit mental associations formed or held in relation and integrated into the āfile headerā dog. Rand said our cognitive functioning depends on tags or words to designate open ended concepts and communication via language is a supplemental function. An observation that aligns with the idea that the hemispheres of the brain need to communicate with āeach otherā in order to make sense of the world and survive in it. The right brain āseesā everything as an integrated whole in constant flux and the left brain wants to identify or disambiguate specific āthingsā and grasp them, in order to function and survive ātheyā have to communicate and agree to act toward a specific goal facilitated by having a common āvocabularyā. Symbolic language verbal and otherwise can be seen as a phenotypical expression of the rational animalās cognitive make up, no? The necessary and sufficient cause of social conditioning. As to concepts not being experienced, only learned , created or used , one can only ask how are learning , creativity or usage not instances of conscious experience? How are they outside or not reducible to awareness ? -
HOW CAN OBJECTIVISM BECOME A DOMINANT IDEOLOGY?
DavidOdden replied to rohintest's topic in Intellectuals and the Media
You may have gotten the ādigestionā impression from HPO, if you ever looked there: there were people who peddled that view, but it isnāt actual Objectivism. It is not so important whether you call that thing the rational faculty or the faculty of reason, what is important is understanding that āreasonā is not just Fregean logical formalisms (and what in the world would ānon-contradictory identification mean is purely Fregean terms?). The tendency in question is the tendency for certain concepts to always be formed, that is, the same units are subsumed under a label though the label differs across languages. Concepts derive from reality and the functional (cognitive) need to make certain grouping because of the nature of manās existence on Earth. In all societies, the necessity of eating, sleeping, breathing and drinking are known which is why these concepts are universal, āwaterā is the perceptible universal entity associated with one of those actions (ābeerā has a more restricted distribution). I donāt know what it even means for a concept to be richer than a word. Maybe you are referring to the fact that a concept is open ended so that there could be trillions of specific instances of ādogā but only two word in English, ādogā and ādogsā. I also donāt have any idea what you mean by apprehending a concept. My guess is that you mean that when you learn a new concept, you usually experience the word the you fill in the definition by asking āwhat does that mean?ā. Though sometimes people āform the conceptā from experience then ask āWhat the heck is that called?ā. But then you donāt experience a concept subjectively ā concepts are not experienced, they are learned or created and used, and always by an individual consciousness. In other words, I donāt get the distinction that you are making. - Yesterday

https://courses.aynrand.org/lexicon/words/ This is the context discussion is supposed to start from. The basic Objectivist corpus of *all* the nonfiction must be understood and integrated for useful productive conversation to occur. Everyone keeps trying to constantly reinvent the wheel at random points when the corpus that was included on the Objectivist Recearch CD ROM must all be read and integrated before all of these random off track conversations appear, and then this context is applied to concretes. -

HOW CAN OBJECTIVISM BECOME A DOMINANT IDEOLOGY?
tadmjones replied to rohintest's topic in Intellectuals and the Media
Itās more the tendency stems from concepts as experienced subjectively are āricherā than the words. Words are objective symbols or āpointersā used to guide a conscious apprehension of a particular concept which are experienced subjectively. Losing sight of the distinction invariably diminishes the important role consciousness plays in experience of reality, as gauche as that may sound to an objective ear. -

tadmjones replied to rohintest's topic in Intellectuals and the Media
Iāve always āheardā Oāism speak of reason and ātheā rational faculty akin to metabolism/ digestive tract with the implied resource management as a system operation. So in my understanding I had reason/rational faculty as I suppose more synonymous than intended? When I look at the lexicon , I see what lead to my misapprehension , what with all the entries that show Rand describing reason as a faculty. All the times I saw it described incorrectly in print , Iāll have recheck my premises before I comment on the distinction in the future. But I do like good cop/ bad cop. -

HOW CAN OBJECTIVISM BECOME A DOMINANT IDEOLOGY?
DavidOdden replied to rohintest's topic in Intellectuals and the Media
Perhaps: there is an industry of over-exoticizing Hopi (no) thanks to Whorf. The basic noun is paahu (which covers water in lakes and water in rivers), and the root concept paa is used for domesticated water as well ā when you water the garden, that's the root that you use. kuuyi can be used for water in a container, but it also applies to milk or beer, i.e. any fluid in a container. Itās not that Hopi doesnāt have a general concept water, instead they have multiple concepts which might overlap. If we had a fluent Hopi speaker, we could ask if water poured on the ground is still kuuyi, or what substance the water pipes carry. -
HOW CAN OBJECTIVISM BECOME A DOMINANT IDEOLOGY?
Doug Morris replied to rohintest's topic in Intellectuals and the Media
There may be a predictable tendency, but not an exceptionless necessity. For example, I understand the Hopi indian language has two different concepts for water, which can be roughly translated into English as "wild water" and "tame water". Any running water is "wild". Whether still water is "wild" or "tame" depends on various things, such as how much water is present in a given instance.
