I have a question!

After reading this site for a long time I finally got my own account. If you want to know about me just go to www.talkobjectivism.com and click on the about page.

I host a weekly show about objectivism (at the link above) and it would be nice if some of the people here would be a part of it. The show has an open format and anyone can call in, even haters of objectivism.

Also I have question about signatures. Is there a limit to the number of links you can have in it? If so I hope I am not breaking any rules, I know some forums frown upon links.

Look forward to talk with you!

The five central concepts of Objectivism are objectivity, reason, rational self-interest, libertarianism and romantic realism.

Associating Objectivism with libertarianism is a very dangerous mistake. You can find Ayn Rand's thoughts on the Libertarian movement here. Hopefully this was just an honest mistake. Replacing "libertarianism" with "Capitalism" would be infinitely better.

In addition, I admonish against presenting these five concepts as if they are all equally important. The Objectivist Ethics presuppose sound metaphysics and epistemology. Similarly, Objectivist Politics presupposes the Objectivist Ethics. Recognizing the hierarchy of knowledge is a crucial aspect of philosophy.

I hope that this helps! Welcome to the forum.

I was not talking about the political party. There is a difference, but if you are that moved by it then write me a new "what is objectivism" page.

Thanks!

Oh and I got that definition form a dictionary I had on my desk it the time when I put up that page... in the very early days of my studying.

There definitely is a difference between Libertarian and libertarian. Nevertheless, using the latter term is still confusing and misleading whereas saying laissez-faire Capitalism articulates the point unambiguously.

While I am scrutinizing your "What is Objectivism?" section:

[Objectivism holds that individuals] gain knowledge by processing the data of perception using reason or “non-contradictory identification”

Saying "non-contradictory identification" suggests that Objectivists are Rationalists such as Plato, Leibniz or Spinoza. This is absolutely untrue and unfortunately it is a common misconception. Objectivism encourages individuals to acquire knowledge by perceiving reality through sound inductive reasoning. Although deductive reasoning can be useful in science and mathematics, it should not be man's primary means of acquiring new knowledge.

Anyway, please to not misconstrue my comments to be disapproving of your website. I think it is a heroic and praiseworthy idea! I am ecstatic that Objectivism is getting a greater foothold in one of my favorite cities.

GreedyCapitalist, the owner of this forum, made some post a while back about limiting links in signatures, but since his own signature has like eight links in it we never really got around to giving a firm number for how many is too many. Anyway, the ones you have are discreet and they all go to your personal sites, it's not like you're advertising for T-Shirts or Viagra, so you're fine as far as I'm concerned. I personally get more irritated with people that have two and three paragraphs worth of quotations, but I figure it's not worth arguing over.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. Did you have a question about Objectivism or just the one about the signatures?

Well, I  upon one of your links in your "What is Objectivism?" page.

You said:

Here [ARE] some links to learn more about the philosophy of Objectivism.

You link to The Objectivist Center(TOC/Atlas Society)!

Are you familiar at all with the Peikoff/Kelley break?

Here, read this if you haven't already.

I enjoy your comments, this is what the site is all about. I started it in hopes that people would help me understand better. Since I am dyslexic I have trouble learning by just reading. I learn better with conversation. That is why i called the site TalkObjectivism.

Pittsburgh is my favorite city too. Thats why I live here! Also it would be nice if you could make it to one of the talk cast sometime. We record it 8pm EST on Sundays.

Thanks!

Also to the comment that mentioned the TOC if you listen to the show called TOC vs ARI you will hear the I am aware of the break. And I am no longer a supporter of the TOC.

You've just demonstrated that to me - by removing that link. You've turned my :) to a ;) .

I live in Pittsburgh as well, but all your shows look like they are recorded at night when I'm at work - and I almost always work every night, but I might take this coming weekend off.

I started it in hopes that people would help me understand better. Since I am dyslexic I have trouble learning by just reading. I learn better with conversation.

And I am better at writing, than I am with speaking. After listening to a recording or two, it looks like you already have a good understanding of Objectivism.

I'm not at all familiar with talkcasts, podcasts, and such. But I think it'd be nice to talk a bit about UPMC and their new smoking policy, and how my co-workers, patients, visitors to the campus I work at are throwing around words in interviews and in conversations with me directly that they have no epistemological right to use, saying things such as: "this is communism", "this is a dictatorship", "they're taking away our rights", etc. It's a hot topic on campus right now, since the smoking ban went into effect July 1 for all UPMC facilities, campuses, grounds, and so forth. It's all private property - they are just excersing that right. Btw, you'll be seeing three, 20ft UPMC signs at the top of each side of the Steel Building in Pittsburgh. The "Top of the Triangle" is now UPMC's, as well as a few other floors. They're in the process of moving their headquarters there. They are the largest employer in this area (43,000 employees).

Hell, I'd love to talk also about how West Penn was calling for governmental intervention when UPMC was trying to (selfishly give mercy) to Mercy Hospital, by taking it into their health care system (which I think is still pending a final decision from the Vatican). I've read interviews where rep's from West Penn have actually said that UPMC is becoming, or is a health care monopoly and needs to be brought to the attention of the goverment. Oh, that's another hot topic at my campus, since UPMC took over the hospital I work at. It used to be called Passavant Hospital, now UPMC Passavant. You should see the amount of growth/expansion that came to this hospital once they took over it! I have workers argue with me about just what a monopoly is, what "non-profit" means, big bonuses paid out to higher-ups, the justification for some of the salaries, the highest at around $3.9 mill. etc. Non-profit does not mean no profit.

I anticipate another hot topic, which I'm still learning about. I think that UPMC wants to ban "freebies" next, but I'm not sure, I'm still trying to find out more about that.

On the UPMC website, this statement makes me proud of my employer:

By exporting excellence nationally and internationally, and fueling the development of new businesses that emerge from UPMC's intellectual capital, core capabilities, and management expertise, UPMC will catalyze a regional economic renaissance.

I've boldfaced that last part for those said West Penn reppy's to eat!! Hahahaha!

[edit to fix my "t" and "e" 's, since both keys are missing from my laptop]

Wow, what a great comment! If you want to be on the show just let me know when you can make it. I dont have a problem recording a show on an off time. Just let me know so I can plan for it.

A friend of mine works for Megees so it would be fun to get you both on the show to talk about UPMC.

Look forward to talking with you!

And a friend of mine works for UPMC's WPIC (Western Psychiatric Institute and Center). She's a Milieu Therapist there - but more: she's definately familiar with Objectivism. I'll send her an email soon, or call her to see if she's interested. The smoking ban seems to have effected the city campuses more, and I'd love to hear what people have been saying out where she's at. Anytime they wanted to interview an employee in the city, according to one article, they declined - no comment. She'll give me the scoop!

I could see it fill the time for an entire show, if we continue to go deeper into the various philosophical aspects of it.

Thanks for the invite, btw. - and welcome to the forum!
