Eponine
Hello all! I decided to make an account and start posting here after lurking for a few days. I'm pretty new to Ayn Rand's works and Objectivism. I finished reading The Fountainhead a couple of weeks ago, and was deeply touched by it. It's one of the great works that make me grateful for being alive and able to appreciate their greatness (another book that gave me the same feelings was Les Miserables). I'm reading Atlas Shrugged right now. I've also learned the basics of Objectivism from the information on Ayn Rand Institute website and Yaron Brook's talks on YouTube. I don't identify as an Objectivist (yet), but I've found Rand's ideas to be pretty compatible with my existing views (I'm an individualist and libertarian), except in the areas of sex and gender roles. I'd like to participate in intellectual discussions here and possibly meet like-minded people. One quick question though: Is there any policy against reviving old, inactive threads? I've found some long-dead threads I may be interested in replying to, but I'm not sure if it's welcome here. Repairman
Hello, Eponine! Welcome to the forum. To answer your question, it is encouraged that you revive threads related to your specific interests. That is to say, that's my observation. It reduces the re-writing of opinions already expressed, I suppose. I've only discovered the works of Ayn Rand, and subsequent Objectivist writers and spokespeople within the past seven years. I've been aware of this forum for approximately one year, and it is absolutely fascinating and gratifying to read some of the views of its participants. It is always a pleasure exchanging thoughts with like-minded people. Enjoy Atlas Shrugged.
softwareNerd
One quick question though: Is there any policy against reviving old, inactive threads? I've found some long-dead threads I may be interested in replying to, but I'm not sure if it's welcome here. No, there's no such policy. If done right, its the preferable way. By "if done right", I mean: it makes sense to read and chew on stuff that has already been said about a topic. That avoid asking "same old questions" again. It also helps frame the new post better. A "not done right" approach would be to reply to a post by someone, where the reply is narrowly targeted at that particular person, even though they were last active two years ago. TL;DR: Posting is welcome if it would be an interesting discussion to members who're focused on Objectivism. Old threads/new threads: feel free to decide what you think makes most sense in a particular case.
JASKN
Welcome to the forum, Eponine. You are sure to find many threads here on sex and gender, with varied and reasoned opinions by different users who nevertheless agree on Rand's most basic philosophic tenets. Reidy
Did you know that Rand was a great admirer of Hugo? See The Romantic Manifesto (but only after you've read the novels).

Eponine
Thanks for your replies and welcome, everyone! I'm glad to know it's okay to revive old threads here. I wasn't sure because I knew some other forums discourage it. @Reidy: Yeah, I learned that Rand admired Hugo from Wikipedia. It was a happy find. Eponine
Hi Eponine! try out the chat too sometime, we've actually been discussing romance and polyamory there pretty recently Thanks! I'm generally not a chat person, because the fast pace is scary to me, haha. But seeing that there are usually just a few people in the chat, I might give it a try sometime.
