  1. Bah, got it confused with something else. I work parttime in a bookstore, so I see literally thousands of books a week. There is a book, though, that has a study on tipping.
  2. Wishful thinking. Iran will have nukes in a couple years and nothing will be done about it. Neo-cons bark loudly, but they have no bite.
  3. I believe conservatives are more apt to accepting Rand and O'ism because they think they are "capitalists" to begin with. I've met several conservatives (mostly secular, non-religous ones) that say Ayn Rand had influence in their lives; never met a liberal to say that. I was a libertarian leaning conservative when I picked up C:UI, and the essay "Conservatism: An Obituary" changed my life. I was always this "free-market conservative" person, but never had the philosophy to lean on before I read that essay. It totally changed my life. I joke that conservatives that love Ayn Rand always evaded and flipped past that one essay
  4. I think there's a book on the subject called The Tipping Point, since tipping is more than just resturants. I tip the guy at the car stereo shop $10 or so whenever he puts something in, so he remembers me and works on my car right away if I bring a problem over to him. Tipping is a cheap way to buy better service. It also saves time!
  5. It's all what you are interested in. Personally, I love political philosophy and economics, so I tore through Capitalism: Unknown Ideal, went to ethics (VOS), OPAR and VOR. If you're not interested in art, dont read the Romantic Manifesto first Also, there are some good audio tapes from ARI, but they are a bit pricey. If there's something on eBAY that you're interested in you can usually get it used at a good discount.
  6. I generally tip very well for good/great service because I had a tipping job and really worked hard to get that extra dollar or two. Even for things like breakfast when the bill is $6-7 at a diner, i'll give a $2 tip because an extra 50 cents isn't going to break my back. There was a diner I'd go to 2-3 times a week for breakfast and I was able to special order stuff and got great service (also had a huge crush on the waitress I had, but nevermind ). I always tipped more than I should because I appriciated their work for me, and they always gave me great service in return. It's nice when they rush your food out and give you a break on drinks every now and then on the bill.
  7. Actually, I just came back from Dr. Brook's lecture The Morality of War and he thinks just the opposite. He said the pivotal point in the Civil War was Sherman's destruction of the South's infrastructure which destroyed the soldiers' morale. He didn't kill many civilians, but instead razed the farms, trains and anything that could support the war effort. I totally agree with him on this point. Also, the US has no obligation to "repair" Iraq. Actually, we can incite a civil war and let the damn terrorists kill themselves.
  8. Yes. I'm a fan of Rumsfeld, but I feel he's worn out his image. Certainly, there are questions about how the occupation has been miserably carried out. Personally, I place most blame on the media. Rice, though, would be a more effective defense secratary in my humble opinion.
  9. I hope to name my first son Hank/Henry, but that's not too original if you're looking for something unique. If it's a girl, how about Francesca? I also like Ari as well for a boy.
  10. My mom called Thrrrrrraaasa white-trash during the campaign. No, French and cash doesn't buy class
  11. Good links, Al Kufr. I'll be making my decision in the next 18 months, so I need all the info I can get.
  12. I have been looking into Officer Training after college, perhaps to be an MP. There is going to be a high demand for military police in the armed forces now that we are taking the cooperative security route within our grand strategy (whether that is a good idea or not is debatable, but not the point of this post). It's either going to officer training or an academy to become a police officer at this point. Generally, I would use the military training to get a better civilian job in law enforcement or perhaps the defense department (I love foreign policy/international relations). I have an uncle who was a colonel in the Air Force. He told me never to enlist. The only way to go is to be an officer. Better pay, better housing, etc. I am friends with a sergeant in Iraq and he agreed that being an officer is the only way to go in the armed forces. Being a student of Objectivism, I'm in conflict about whether this would be a good move. I'm leaning toward yes, that it is a selfish move: it's voluntary, it's for a better career in law enforcement after service and I've always wanted to serve my country because. IMHO, the United States even with all its flaws is still the greatest country on Earth.
  13. Not everyone thinks this way. This oped sums up everything very well More on the site.
  14. It's like the police calling you 72 hours in advance: "Hey, we're going to be searching your house for drugs in 72 hours. We just wanted to let you know! Thanks!"
  15. Privatization of Social Security and a decrease in federal spending would be nice. Along with taking a stronger line on Iran.
  16. Actually, since I can't edit I have to add this. Before voting for Bush, take a look at this. Are these the kind of folks supporting Bush in this election? Is this an actual "mainstream" belief that man is so evil? I really hate to polute this board with such evil, but I think it's worth reading.
  17. I would agree with you. If you don't defend a capitalist ally, you are inviting an attack on your own country. It's not the country that's being attacked, but the fundamental right to life. That's something worth being defended.
  18. Got a 2003 Chevy s-10. It's only a 4-cyl, but I have a massive system and GPS in there. Not a bad deal for $12k Love the plates Besty I have the "Who is John Galt?" frame from eBAY on my truck.
  19. What's interesting is the new proported tape from al-qaida. They promise blood in the streets and more casualties than we can count if Bush is reelected. I don't know how to read it.
