The republicans are making too much of her, but the democrats are right to bring her up: she's a religious zealot, just like Bush, and she could become president, becaouse of McCain's age.

She's very dangerous, because we have no idea how irrational she really is, and how much of her religion she really means(we do know it's a lot though), and that makes her the number one issue.

Even though Obama is a socialist, he will likely weigh his decisions against public opinion, consider the geo-political consequences, listen to experts and technocrats, just like Clinton did. We have no clue what Palin's decisionmaking would be based on. What if she decides the iranian people or the saudis need our help, an do what Bush did in Iraq to a country twice the size, and with more fanatical suicide bombers than any others? We already know she means what she says on abortion, I assume she's just as serious about things in the Bible. Have you read the thing lately? Of course we need to talk about her.

Does anyone think that McCain will ditch Palin for a better running mate in the next couple weeks? A coworker told me about a recent news broadcast where they interviewed a room-full of people. They were asked whether they knew a friend or relative who was not voting for Obama because he is black. Three people raised their hands. They were then asked whether they knew anyone who wasn't voting for McCain because he picked Palin as his VP. The whole crowd raised their hands.

I'm tempted to say "no chance in hell." But given McCain's timidity and overall half-competent campaign (I feel charitable today) he might just drive the final nail on his political coffin.

Changing the ticket at all is a very bad idea. It makes the presidential candidate seem indecisive and not very bright. I mean, can't he make up his mind about a pleasant figure-head? Doing so this late in the campaign would be disastrous. Even changing the ticket in the second term (as some urged Bush the elder do) is chancy. I think that happened in the past (and FDR had more than one VP, but then he was elected to four terms), but not anymore.

I'll say this again: I wish we could do the primaries over.

BTW historically in recent times the candidate of the aprty in power tends to loose when the economy is in a bad shape. Given the troubles these days, Obama could possibly win in a landslide the likes of which we haven't seen for over 20 years. Both in the electoral college and the popular vote. The latter has no official significance, but a large win there will give Obama a popular mandate, or at least make him think he has a popular madate. And a large vote for Obama may carry over into a large vote for his party in Congress (and state and local races too).

I still think this outcome wuold be better than a McCain presidency for reasons I've outlined before. But I dread election day just the same.

In 92 and 96 I amused myself with funny political slogans. This year all I can think of is "Obama or McCain? We're screwed either way."
