softwareNerd
I apologize that the forum was down for a while yesterday and again today. We've come to a point with the forum software where we need to upgrade to the next major version. Not upgrading will soon see us getting fewer updates and patches. If anyone is curious what the new software feels like, you can check it out at: http://testoo.objectivismonline.com/ That test site should let you do the normal things you do on the forum, but it will be deleted once we upgrade the real thing. The new one is a bit slower, but that is probably a question of tuning things once we go live. Upgrading the test forum (a copy of the real thing) was easy-peasy. Unfortunately Murphy's Law caught up with us. Doing "exactly" the same thing live was not as smooth. We plan to try again on the weekend. I will post again on the day. JASKN
Well, it looks like the update finally went through... with one snag: About 30 posts didn't make it. The good news is that we know which posts (thanks softwareNerd). So, we've kept the prior forum version up and running at old.objectivismonline.com. If anyone would like to copy/past their lost post(s) into the now-updated forum, the content can be found in the following links: http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=27859&p=338180 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=27859&p=338183 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28340&p=338173 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28340&p=338174 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28340&p=338181 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28581&p=338160 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28581&p=338165 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28865&p=338161 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28865&p=338162 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28865&p=338163 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28865&p=338164 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28869&p=338157 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28869&p=338167 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28869&p=338176 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338166 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338168 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338169 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338170 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338175 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338177 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338178 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338179 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338182 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338185 http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28877&p=338188 I may or may not have time to go through the some of the links/posts later. So if you repost, go ahead and let me know in this thread, and I'll skip that if I get a chance to go through them. Little tweaks will still be implemented here and there. If you see something wonky or otherwise have any thoughts on the update, let us know below! bluecherry
This link http://old.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=28856&p=338187 seems to be broken. Also, when not logged in I can't seem to locate the link for the "new content" page. The design looks a little different once I sign in, possibly because before I had it set up on my account to keep the old blue layout (the colors/background I have upon sign in right now are similar to those old ones), so the "new content" link is prominently displayed at the top right upon signing in for me while not there before logged out. softwareNerd
Thanks for the feedback. 1. The link was to a post in a mod-forum, so clicking goes nowhere for most. I've removed it from the list above. 2. Not logged in: yes the default theme shows up. Once you log in, your chosen Theme kicks in (menu to choose is bottom of page). One can choose a theme when not logged in, but it won't remember that the next time. 3. Not sure where "New Content" is when one is not logged in. I see they have an option called "Activity Stream" which is something like that. Will need to check
JASKN
Also, when not logged in I can't seem to locate the link for the "new content" page. I don't believe the "New Content" button is visible for users who are not logged in. However, we have a block on the side of the Forums page that shows recent topics. bluecherry
Does the topics section show recently posted in threads or just newly created threads though?
JASKN
Does the topics section show recently posted in threads or just newly created threads though? In "New Content," it looks like the only option is to view by topics, and those topics are arranged by most recently posted only. "Activity Stream" is located within the dropdown menu next to "New Content," and can switch to a view showing posts or topics, and can also sort topics based on start date. Finally, if you're in a specific forum, you can sort threads by start date via a dropdown menu on the upper right.
bluecherry
My question was about the "topic feed" section on the main forum page.
JASKN
My question was about the "topic feed" section on the main forum page. Ah, sorry... That mirrors the "New Content" page, sorting topics by most recent posts, top down.
bluecherry
Ok. That's what I wanted to know. Thanks.
softwareNerd
In the last week the forum has been up and down a lot. Turned out that our Wiki was being spammed with bots creating many new accounts and pages. That's been cleaned up now. Anyone who wants to post to/edit the wiki will need to ask a Mod or Admin on the forum for a login id. The registration cannot be done automatically. If you've not see the wiki, here's a list of pages. The "MainPage" is in that list. This is unrelated to the other problem with the forum software: when you click to post and it spins its wheels, and you click again, and you end up with multiple posts. Someone from the company that makes the forum software has looked at this on our forum and we've not had a solution yet. But, this version of their software is a complete re-write and I'm hoping it gets better as they polish newer sub-releases. JASKN
The forum will be down for a bit while the most recent upgrades are installed.
JASKN
Looks like the upgrade was a success, but reset some settings back to default. Also, it appears that the "New Content" section is gone for good. I'll poke around and try to get things back to normal. Performance may be slow for today while the system automatically performs some background tasks associated with the upgrade. Edit: It does not look like the upgrade fixed the problem with major lag when posting. Edited November 21, 2015 by JASKN
bluecherry
I don't like the "unread content" thing they replaced the "new content" page with. >:[
softwareNerd
I too preferred the previous way of seeing (say) the last week's posts. They do have an option on "Unread Content" that allows you to Edit what you see. Added: Actually, it does not seem to be saving my edits there. But, using the "Activity" option, I can see recent stuff, and it seems like they allow you to define custom selections to create other "activity streams". JASKN
I updated the "Unread Content" stream settings to include by default topics which have already been read, displayed in non-bold text (though this can be changed in the "Edit this stream" settings), since I think that had been the default before... though maybe that had just been my default. But, new streams can be saved per user and made as his/her default stream by checking the box next to the stream title at the top. After a new default is set, it will show up as the stream button on the top right of the forum, with all of each user's saved/custom stream settings.
