The Durande
I am an English Teacher while in Italy - which probably wont be for a while - as long as those life-hating psychopath terrorists are saying that the streets of Italy will flow with blood unless they pull their troops out. For such a mystic/semi-socialist country, Italy is not too bad an ally, even though their troop support amounts to about nothing. Next to the rest of continental Europe they are heroic! Here, I have several hats. Oxnard, CA - inventory control at a produce cooler (I counted strawberries.) Rome, NY - Opened a Pizzeria (Too much work, not enough money) Fort Meyers,FL - settling catastrphe insurance claims (for a few months-starting next week) Austin, TX - (hope to be there by January)(something to do with golf would be nice, but I'll probably stay in the insurance claims field.) BUT ALL OF THAT IS MEANINGLESS. I am going to be a novelist. I have 120 pages done, about 200-250 to go.
Zeus
I must be more unlike others here since I am an aspiring nonfiction writer. It would have been nice to become an intellectual but really all I ever wanted to do was write books for laymen (and to teach). Actually, I'm an aspiring nonfiction writer too. I might get a PhD but that is not a prerequisite for the path I'm treading. If some really good fictional idea crops up, I might pursue it but that's not my primary focus. It is fallacious to believe that writing books for laymen is not the work of an intellectual, especially since it is outside the university that one finds the most rationality these days. In fact, I'm now convinced that the ability to communicate objectively with laymen should be a prerequisite for the label, "intellectual." The Durande
Betsy, Do you make the kind of matches I can strike on the pavement or the ones you can only use on the matchbox? Seriously, I could use a match. I need to have my fire lit. If you know any Kay Ludlows, point them in my direction please. Thanks.
Bowzer
In fact, I'm now convinced that the ability to communicate objectively with laymen should be a prerequisite for the label, "intellectual." *nod* There is a place for copious footnotes and references and then there is a place for easy-to-read but insightful texts. You are right in your assessment. A layman's book about philosophy, for example, can only properly be done by a writer that has fully integrated and concretized his most abstract ideas. This is surely the sign of a true intellectual.
Betsy
Seriously, I could use a match. I need to have my fire lit. If you know any Kay Ludlows, point them in my direction please. Thanks. Three suggestions: Find out where your "Kay Ludlow" is most likely to be. (Try Objectivist community clubs, Objectivist conferences, and Objectivist boards like this one.) Go there. Go after her. === Since you're the GUY, take the lead. Don't wait for HER to come to YOU.
Carla
Two weeks from now, I'll embark on my first "real" job as an Editorial Assistant at a publishing company that produces non-fiction books for young adults. I am also studying for the LSAT, though at the moment I'm not sure when I'll want to attend law school--probably one to four years from now. drsm
I'm a veterinarian, concentrating primarily in small animal surgery and advanced diagnostics (ultrasound, endoscopy, etc.). I'm also a business owner, running a six-veterinarian practice with my business partner (not an Objectivist). We employ approximately 45-50 people. DavidV
I recently finished a master’s in MIS and currently work as a web developer. My latest project is the creation of an online marketplace for a particular industry. It’s a tremendously ambitious and risky project for a lone developer straight out of school, which may explain my lack of participation here for the last and next few months. I also manage a number of non-profit sites (like this one ) which collectively receive well over a million visits every month. FYI: I live somewhere in the vicinity of Austin/Houston and may be looking for work there in about six months if things go well. I would also like to make friends with any Objectivists in the area. Betsy, As an Objectivist matchmaker, you must have some idea of the ratio of females to males in the Objectivist community. So, my questions are A) What would you estimate this ratio to be, and What advice to you have for males such as Durande and myself who have trouble finding good Objectivist females? Fortunately, one characteristic of an Objectivist is a mad obsession with one's work, which keeps me distracted enough from trying to find female companionship

Betsy
As an Objectivist matchmaker, you must have some idea of the ratio of females to males in the Objectivist community. Sure, but it depends on WHERE in the Objectivist community. On boards like this, it is about 2-3 to one against you. Ditto for Objectivist chat channels and conferences. At the conferences, the ratio at dances and optional courses on psychology, literature, and the visual arts is closer to even. The real trick is to PUT the odds in your favor by creating the WHERE. Sit down next to an attractive gal at breakfast. Send an e-mail to the female on HBL who said something you admire and thank her. Send a private message to the lady you met on the IRC channel. So, my questions are A) What would you estimate this ratio to be, and What advice to you have for males such as Durande and myself who have trouble finding good Objectivist females?Pretty much what I told to Durande: Go to where the gals are and make your move. That means e-mail her, IM her, go to conferences, learn to dance, ask her to dance, take Ellen Kenner's course in Romance, after class go over to that babe in the third row and thank her for asking that question about romance at the office, after she responds invite her out for a cup of coffee, etc. Fortunately, one characteristic of an Objectivist is a mad obsession with one's work, which keeps me distracted enough from trying to find female companionship I know. That's a GUY thing. When I give my "How to find romance at the conference" talks, the first thing I tell the guys is MAKE IT A PRIORITY. Take finding romance seriously. Put some time and attention into it just like you do for your careers. If you do, you will get results. (Testimonials available.)

Walker
- I'm an undergrad Sophomore finance/math student. I'd like to pursue a career in some type of wealth management job - however, I'm still looking for different internship opportunities to learn as much about as many possible careers as I can. I just finished up a Summer marketing internship at a data services company. I worked independently on a variety of business development projects focused on new pricing, licensing, terms of use, and distribution processes for 10+ products/services. I got offered a job, but I figured it'd be best to finish school. Secondary Occuptions: Full-time boyfriend to a beautiful girlfriend Guitar player for 7 years. Reader (mostly investing and philosophy) Ranting editorial writer (so far I've gotten one published (: ) Vice President of the Objectivist Club @ NYU Soon-to-be investor

I design and fabricate systems for the application of water treatment chemicals to industrial and commercial processes. My last face-to-face meeting with a real Objectivist was eight years ago when living near Charlotte, NC. My only contact with Objectivists these days is through the Internet.I've been lurking on this website for a few months, but this has the dubious virtue of being my first post. I must further state that this website is by far the slickest Objectivist forum I've encountered. My compliments to the webmaster.
Betsy
Question for Betsy. What do you mean "Den Mother" and "Mama Lion" to students of Oism? I enjoy helping bright young people just beginning to to discover Objectivism so I hang around places like ObjectivismOnline.net, support campus clubs, explain difficult ideas in simple terms, defend and support people I share values with, and generally advise and mentor young Objectivists. "Den Mother" and "Mama Lion" were honorary titles they bestowed on me for those activities.
