The object is simple: post a few lines from some of your favourite song lyrics, ones that exemplify man as a hero, or which profess self-sufficiency, strength, pride; anything that you feel is inherently-Objectivist. Hopefully we can get people interested in each others songs and checking out those artists - basically, this is a kind of 'post your favourite bands' thread really, only you can actually back up why they're good with some choice quotes from your favourite songs. :dough:

Here you have a chance to show why they're good. I do understand however that often lyrics don't have quite the impact they do as when they are being sung and have music playing behind them. But let's give it a shot.

I'll get the ball rolling with a nice lot of my favourites:

Everything seems tempting, But nothing comes for free...

I often wonder how you drive, when the roads too dark to see...

If you don't stop there, you'll make it through.

Stop dreaming, start something

When it's in your hand just start anew

It's ok to use your ability

You must know, it's hard to choose

Your righteous lies, you slip and slide

And now I want you to just

Fade out, the static in my stereo may,

Fade out, the new transmission's calling.

Have you ever made love to a beautiful girl

Made you feel like it's not such a bad world

Hey man now you're really living

Do you know what it's like to fall on the floor

And cry your guts out 'til you got no more

Hey man now you're really living

Constantly searching to find something new

But what will you find when you think that nothing’s true?

Maybe it’s that nothing is new

So you let me hear songs that were written all about you

The good songs weren’t written for you, they’ll never be about you...

... Sing a song about myself, keep singing the song about myself

Not some invisible world

The process of belief is an elixir when you're weak

I must confess, at times I indulge it on the sneak

But generally my outlook's not so bleak...

...I'm materialist

I ain't no Deist

It's there for all to see, so don't talk of hidden mystery with me

(and I'm not meek!)

Are you going to live your life standing in the back

looking around?

are you going to waste your time

gotta make a move or you'll miss out

Someone is going to ask you what it's all about

stick around nostalgia won't let you down

someone is going to ask you what it's all about

what are you going to have to say for yourself?

I think that'll do for now. I could go on for hours! :D

Some people say that i'm not worth it

I've made mistakes but nobody's perfect

Guess I'll give it a try

I've got one last chance to get myself together

I can't lose no more time it's now or never and I'll try to remember who i used to be

I've got one last chance to get myself together

i'm awake, why wait?

i dont need someone to tell me who to be today.

i'm quite sure, unlike before,

came off the road and i forgot what i was looking for.

all i see,

is a less good version of a man i dont wanna be.

all i feel,

is you tie me down to something that just isnt real.

all i need,

is some truth god help me,

before the devil buries me, yeah.

i cant do nothing, if i cant do something my way,

well i must be crazy if i follow every word you say.

when the shit comes down, you're the first to walk away

Maybe I'm mistaken

Expecting you to fight

Or maybe I'm just crazy

I don't know wrong from right. But while I'm

still living

I've just got this to say

It's always up to you, if you want to be that,

Want to see that, want to see it that way.

Someone said give, but I just didn't dare

What good advice are you waiting to hear?

Hearing's alright for them that's all there

You'd better gain control now

You'd better show 'em all now

You'd better make or break now

You'd better give and take now

You'll have to push and shove now

You'll have to find some love now

You'd better gain control now

I couldn't resist posting these ones:

When Karl Marx was a boy

he took a hard look around

He saw people were starving all over the place

while others were painting the town

The public spirited boy

became a public spirited man

So he worked very hard and he read everything

until he came up with a plan

There'll be no exploitation

of the worker or his kin

No discrimination 'cause of the color of your

skin

No more private property

It would not be allowed

No one could rise too high

No one could sink too low

or go under completely like some we all know

Oh Karl the world isn't fair

It isn't and never will be

They tried out your plan

It brought misery instead

If you'd seen how they worked it

you'd be glad you were dead

just like I'm glad I'm living in the land of the

free

where the rich just get richer

and the poor you don't ever have to see

Que pasó pregunto yo -What Happened I ask

Pregunto yo que pasó en el mundo hoy - I ask what happened in the world today

Que en todos los diarios yo leo las mismas noticias de horror -That in all the papers I read the same news of horror

Vidas que callan sin razón -Lives that close/end without reason

Porque será que hay tanta guerra -Because it will be if theres so much war

Porque será que hay tanta pena -Becasue it will be if theres so much pain

I'll go with:

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;

I will choose a path that's clear-

I will choose Free Will!

The most endangered species,

The honest man,

Will still survive annihilation.

Forming a world

State of integrity,

Sensitive, open and strong.

No, his mind is not for rent

To any god or government

Always hopeful, yet discontent

He knows changes aren't permanent...

But change is!

They say there are strangers, who threaten us

In our immigrants and infidels

They say there is strangeness, too dangerous

In our theatres and bookstore shelves

That those who know what's best for us

Must rise and save us from ourselves...

You can twist perceptions

Reality won't budge

You can raise objections

I will be the judge

and the jury

If the futures looking dark

We're the ones who have to shine

If there's no one in control

We're the ones who draw the line

Though we live in trying times;

We're the ones who have to try

Though we know that time has wings;

We're the ones who have to fly!

If we keep our pride

Though paradise is lost

We will pay the price,

But we will not count the cost

Well, you can stake that claim

Good work is the key to good fortune

Winners take that praise

Losers seldom take that blame

I don't believe in destiny,

or the guiding hand of fate

I don't believe in forever,

or love as a mystical state

I don't believe in the stars or the planets,

or angels watching from above

But I believe there's a ghost of a chance

we can find someone to love

And make it last

One day I feel I'm on top of the world

And the next it's falling in on me

I can get back on

I can get back on

I've got my own moral compass to steer by

A guiding star beats a spirit in the sky

And all the preaching voices -

Empty vessels ring so loud

The guy is too good...

Not that I agree with everything Bob Marley said or did, but I really like this particular line from "Get Up, Stand Up"...

"Most people think great god will come from the sky, take away everything and make everybody feel high/But if you know what life is worth you will look for yours on earth/And now when you see the light, stand up for your right/Get up stand up, stand up for your right/Get up stand up, don't give up the fight/Life is your right, so don't give up the fight".

A favorite when I'm feeling high on life.

Cowboy Junkies - To Live is to Fly

Days up and down they come

like rain on a conga drum

forget most, remember some

but don't turn none away

Everything is not enough

nothing is too much to bear

where you been is good and gone

all you keep's the getting there

To live is to fly low and high

so shake the dust off of your wings

and the sleep out of your eyes

I'm gonna see Rush in concert at the end of july. I am so excited!

I saw them in Houston about 10 years ago and they were awesome! Neil Peart's drum solo is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. And watching Geddy Lee play bass and keyboard at the same time is quite amazing as well.

I saw them in Houston about 10 years ago and they were awesome!

I saw them in São Paulo (their largest audience ever at 60,000 people!), that was something - way better than the Rio show that ended up on DVD. If you think the crowd was wild on Rush in Rio, you've seen nothing!

I'm hoping they bring their Snakes & Arrows tour here, but it doesn't seem likely right now

ooh, MRock you forgot one.

I have to think they are talking about man's mind.

It is the fire that lights itself

But it burns with a restless flame

The arrow on a moving target

The archer must be sure of his aim

It is the engine that drives itself

But it chooses the uphill climb

A bearing on magnetic north

Growing farther away all the time

...

It is the rocket that ignites itself

And launches its way to the stars

A driver on a busy freeway

Racing the oblivious cars

It's the motor of the western world

Spinning off to every extreme

Pure as a lover's desire

Evil as a murderer's dream

and the other high on life song...

I turn my back to the wind

To catch my breath

Before I start off again.

Driven on without a moment to spend

To pass an evening with a drink and a friend

I let my skin get too thin

I'd like to pause

No matter what I pretend

Like some pilgrim

Who learns to transcend

Learns to live as if each step was the end

(Time stand still)

I'm not looking back

But I want to look around me now

(Time stand still)

See more of the people and the places that surround me now

Freeze this moment a little bit longer

Make each sensation a little bit stronger

Experience slips away

Experience slips away

Helloween had the capacity simultaneously to create fantastic material and also awful nonsense. Here's extracts from some of the best, all of which are on Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1:

You, you say that you have lost the way

Got no aim, just living for today?

Look up to the sky above and see the morning sun again

You've got so much power inside so cry it out, my friend

I'm alive!

There's no use in hanging all around

You're a king, can't you see your crown?

Look into my eyes, so many things are waiting to be done

You just need a friend, together, we will sing along

I'm alive!

Higher, I've set my own limits and bounds

There's a fire burning so hot in my head

Oh, I hear you say "That is the way of the world"

No, hear what I say, I wanna do so much in my way

We've got

A little time - to build up our lives

A little time - to make up our minds

A little time - to fill up our dreams

A little time - time...

Life can be for living

Just try and never give in

Tell everyone the way

To Future World

One day you'll live in happiness with a heart that's full of joy

You'll say "the world tomorrow" without fear

The feeling of togetherness will be at your side

You'll say you love your life and you'll know why

'cause we all live in Future World

A world that's full of love

Our future life will be glorious

Come with me - Future World

Two verses from Cake's "Short Skirt, Long Jacket":

I want a girl with a mind like a diamond

I want a girl who knows what's best

I want a girl with shoes that cut

And eyes that burn like cigarettes

I want a girl with the right allocations

who is fast and thorough and sharp as a tack,

She is playing with her jewelry, she is putting up her hair

She is touring the facility

and picking up slack

I want a girl with a short skirt and a

long jacket

I want a girl who gets up early

I want a girl who stays up late

I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity

Who uses a machete to cut through red tape

With fingernails that shine like justice

And a voice that is dark like tinted glass

She is fast, thorough and sharp as a tack,

She is touring the facility and picking up slack

I want a girl with a short skirt and a looooooong,

long jacket

Unfortunately they sink the song with the last verse, which reveals the woman to be not all that great, and the implication is that she doesn't know it. Matches the way the song sounds, but after those two verses... man! They really dropped the ball.

My favorite is "fingernails that shine like justice..."

One more Peart

What you own is your own kingdom

What you do is your own glory

What you love is your own power

What you live is your own story

In your head is the answer

Let it guide you along

Let your heart be the anchor

And the beat of your own song

Also Peart

We can only grow the way the wind blows

On a bare and weathered shore

We can only bow to the here and now

In our elemental war

We can only go the way the wind blows

We can only bow to the here and now

Or be broken down blow by blow

"Attack" by 30 Seconds to Mars

I won't suffer, be broken, get tired, or wasted

Surrender to nothing, or give up what I

Started and stopped it, from end to beginning

A new day is coming, and I am finally free

This verse was nothing short of my anthem (no pun intended) for my first year of college.

The Fire Theft - Sinatra

Believe in all the good things you keep inside

There is no freedom in life without freedom of mind

I find myself running from fate

Whether or not I'm hunted by circumstance

Every day, rearranging

Wind and waves and the cool of a moon-lit sound

Hole in the cloud from the tears of faded crowds

Remembering a reason to be born

Taking back the fire from all the gods

I can't bury my life when I can fill it up with joy

I can't bury my life when I know I have the choice

More from Rush... imagine that!

Rush - New World Man

He's a rebel and a runner

He's a signal turning green

He's a restless young romantic

Who wants to run the big machine

And from the song I want played at my funeral:

Frank Sinatra - My Way

For what is a man, what has he got?

If not himself, then he has naught

To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels

The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!

[instrumental]

Yes, it was my way

Time- Pink Floyd

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day

You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you

No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking

And racing around to come up behind you again

The sun is the same in the relative way, but youre older

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time

Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way

The time is gone, the song is over, thought Id something more to say

Home, home again

I like to be here when I can

And when I come home cold and tired

Its good to warm my bones beside the fire

Far away across the field

The tolling of the iron bell

Calls the faithful to their knees

To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

Do it again- Steely Dan

In the mornin you go gunnin

For the man who stole your water

And you fire till he is done in

But they catch you at the border

And the mourners are all singin

As they drag you by your feet

But the hangman isnt hangin

And they put you on the street

Chorus:

You go back jack do it again

Wheel turnin round and round

You go back jack do it again

When you know shes no high climber

Then you find your only friend

In a room with your two timer

And youre sure youre near the end

Then you love a little wild one

And she brings you only sorrow

All the time you know shes smilin

Youll be on your knees tomorrow

Chorus

Now you swear and kick and beg us

That youre not a gamblin man

Then you find youre back in vegas

With a handle in your hand

Your black cards can make you money

So you hide them when youre able

In the land of milk and honey

You must put them on the table

Amen to all the Rush posts!!!

I went to their Snakes & Arrows tour in Raleigh, NC on the Wednesday before the last one... it was beyond incredible. I'm thinking about driving to another show in Texas or up somewhere north at the end of the summer.

Some of my very favorites have already been taken (especially Something for Nothing), but here's a few that have been left out:

Anthem

Know your place in life is where you want to be

Don't let them tell you that you owe it all to me

Keep on looking forward...no use in looking 'round

Hold your head above the ground and they won't bring you down

Anthem of the heart and anthem of the mind

A funeral dirge for eyes gone blind

We marvel after those who sought

The wonders of the world, wonders of the world

Wonders of the world they wrought

Live for yourself...there's no one else

More worth living for

Begging hands and bleeding hearts will only cry out for more

Well, I know they've always told you

Selfishness was wrong

Yet it was for me, not you, I came to write this song

Closer to the Heart

And the men who hold high places

Must be the ones who start

To mold a new reality

Closer to the heart

Closer to the heart

The blacksmith and the artist

Reflect it in their art

They forge their creativity

Closer to the heart

Closer to the heart

Philosophers and ploughmen

Each must know his part

To sow a new mentality

Closer to the heart

Closer to the heart

You can be the captain

I will draw the chart

Sailing into destiny

Closer to the heart

2112, Part V - Oracle: The Dream

I wandered home though the silent streets

And fell into a fitful sleep

Escape to realms beyond the night

Dream can't you show me the light?

I stand atop a spiral stair

An oracle confronts me there

He leads me on light years away

Through astral nights, galactic days

I see the works of gifted hands

That grace this strange and wondrous land

I see the hand of man arise

With hungry mind and open eyes

They left the planet long ago

The elder race still learn and grow

Their power grows with purpose strong

To claim the home where they belong

Home to tear the Temples down...

Home to change!

There's lots of great Rush stuff on YouTube for anyone who isn't familiar with them.

Anybody recognize what my avatar is from? If you do, I'll give you a digital smile...

I didn't so much forget it as not post it because you can't really take a quote from it and preserve the message and impact. Your solution of quoting pretty much the whole thing works for me though :P

Counterparts is my favorite Rush album, the lyrics are powerful and inspiring and the music is pretty much Rush at peak performance - which is saying something. The level of creativity that went into composing those songs is fantastic - as is the musicianship (is that a word?) that it takes to perform them. Anyone interested in the band would do well starting with Counterparts.

Indeed. Counterparts was an EXCEPTIONAL piece of work. I'm highly impressed with Snakes And Arrows, as well. Probably along the same level, in my opinion.

Guttermouth - Contribution

not gonna say I'm sorry would society even care

not gonna volunteer my time to

cracked out mothers

all the others

who wasted every chance they're given

not gonna say I'm sorry my anger won't turn to shame

you'll get no apology

cuz I don't care

Bad Religion - Give You Nothing

Now we realize that we have nothing to say.

If your reserve is weak, audacity complete.

Ask yourself again, "Do I deserve much from them?" No!

Hey, everybody's looking but they never can see,

All the angst, corruption and the dishonesty.

Look around and ask someone if you are alive,

You're a sidewalk cipher speaking prionic jive,

So I give you me, I give you nothing!

I said I give you me, I give you nothing!

Bad Religion - Don't Pray On Me

A bitter debate and a feminine fate

Lie in tandem like two precious babes

While the former gets warmer, it's the latter that matters

Except on the nation's airwaves

And custodians of public opinion stayed back

After vainly discussing her rights

Lay hands off her body

It's not your fucking life

Bad Religion - Live Again ( The Fall of Man )

The road is narrow, the horizon wide

And they say what's waiting on the other side is so rewarding and the ultimate prize

But what good is something if you can't have it until you die?

Desperate, tenacious, clinging like a grain of sand

Watching its foundation wash away

Drunk with the assertions they know they can't defend

Confident that they might live again.

Dragonforce - Revolution DeathSquad

Far and wide across the land the victory is ours

On towards the gates of reason

Fight for the truth and the freedom Gloria

FEAR - No More Nothing

No more peace talks

No more disarmament

No more Mr. Nice Guy

No more nothing

Ignite - Poverty For All

Poverty for all

But freedom's the exception

The Proletariat, now the

Red Bourgeoisie

The murder, the torture

The terror, the famine

Fifty years under the

Communist regimes

The sorrow, a so-called liberation

The sorrow, a violent domination

Sorrow, the humiliation

Fifty years, the death of a nation

The price of freedom,

is worth it to me

Minor Threat - Filler

Your brain is clay

What's going on?

You picked up a bible

And now you're gone

It's in your head [x3]

FILLER

You call it religion

You're full of shit

FILLER

And of course

Rush - Cinderella Man

A modest man from Mandrake

Travelled rich to the city

He had a need to discover

A use for his newly-found wealth

Because he was human

Because he had goodness

Because he was moral

They called him insane

Delusions of grandeur

Visions of splendor

A manic depressive

He walks in the rain

Bob Seger's Like A Rock has very straightforward lyrics, which is part of it's charm. It's about pride and strength and being a man.

Here it is on youtube. Someone set the song to their family album, so you can just listen without viewing.

The Lyrics:

Stood there boldly

Sweatin' in the sun.

Felt like a million,

Felt like number one.

The height of summer,

I'd never felt that strong,

Like a rock.

I was eighteen,

Didn't have a care,

Working for peanuts,

Not a dime to spare.

But I was lean and

Solid everywhere

Like a rock.

My hands were steady.

My eyes were clear and bright.

My walk had purpose.

My steps were quick and light.

And I held firmly

To what I felt was right

Like a rock.

Like a rock, I was strong as I could be.

Like a rock, nothin' ever got to me.

Like a rock, I was something to see.

Like a rock.

And I stood arrow straight,

Unencumbered by the weight

Of all these hustlers and their schemes.

I stood proud, I stood tall,

High above it all.

I still believed in my dreams.

Twenty years now.

Where'd they go?

Twenty years,

I don't know.

I sit and I wonder sometimes

Where they've gone.

And sometimes late at night

When I'm bathed in the firelight,

The moon comes callin' a ghostly white,

And I recall,

I recall.

Like a rock, standin' arrow straight.

Like a rock, chargin' from the gate.

Like a rock, carryin' the weight.

Like a rock.

Oh, like a rock, the sun upon my skin.

Like a rock, hard against the wind.

Like a rock, I see myself again.

Like a rock.

Oh, like a rock.

Oh....

Love it.

Virgin Steele (lyrics by David De Feis)

INVICTUS

"A Sonnet of Pure Victory

A Hymn to the Spirits of Freedom and Grace

And whichever Gods there may be...

Manacled, Beaten, Blackened and

Burned Cast from the

Light of the Goal I'll never falter, stumble or kneel

Thanks to the strength of my Soul

Lashed by the Winds of Fate

Stung by the Gods of Hate

I'm Rising in Power,

I'm Rising Unchained Call this a

Sacred Vow All that I tell you now I may be

Bloody, but I am unbowed I am Power

Harken the Hour,

Season and Day Phantom of Dark Misery

Summon your Demons,

Hunger and Hate Spirit of Impurity Ravaged by

Fire, stripped and enslaved

Torn from the World that I know I'll never cry out,

buckle or kneel I am the King of my Soul

Stung by the Gods of Wrath

Blinded by Circumstance

I'm Rising in Power,

I'm Rising Unchained

All that I tell you now

Sure as a Sacred Vow I may be

Bloody, but I am unbowed"

Rush- Something for Nothing:

"What you own is your own kingdom.

What you do is your own glory.

What you love is your own power.

What you live is your own story."

Rush- 2112- The Oracle

I stand atop a spiral stair

An oracle confronts me there

He leads me on light years away

Through astral nights, galactic days

I see the works of gifted hands

That grace this strange and wondrous land

I see the hand of man arise

With hungry mind and open eyes

They left the planet long ago

The elder race still learn and grow

Their power grows with purpose strong

To claim the home where they belong

Home to tear the Temples down...

Home to change!
